Hi.
I am due to move into a new flat with my nine year old soon and basically will be starting from scratch. I was under the impression that i could claim for a crisis loan or a loan similar to this for furniture etc as i have no money to purchase any. i spoke to the advisor at the jobcentre and although very helpful wasn't sure if i was entitled to make a claim as my JSA claim at the moment is contributions based and from what the paperwork says you have to be on income based JSA and claiming for 26 weeks..?. If this is correct are there any other avenues open to me..? If not i am gonna find it hard for the next six months till i can put in a claim.

You might be entitled to a Community Care Grant to buy furniture etc & it doesn't have to be paid back, I got one recently when I moved house.
Who is eligible?
You can apply for a Community Care Grant if you are either:- already getting Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Pension Credit, or payment on account of one of these benefits
- likely to start getting one of these benefits within the next six weeks because you're moving out of care
and any one of the following applies:- you're moving out of residential or institutional care to live independently
- you're moving to a new home which will be more suitable for you following an unsettled period in your life and are being resettled by an organisation like a local council or voluntary organisation
- you need help to stay in your home and not go into residential care or hospital
- you need help because you and your family face exceptional pressure, such as family breakdown or because one of you has a long-term illness
- you look after someone who is ill or disabled, or has been released from custody on temporary licence
- you need help with expenses such as visiting someone who is ill, or to attend a relative's funeral

Doesn't seem like it. However, you can claim a crisis loan - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_10018856 (everyone is entitled to this - on benefits or not)Sealed pot challenge #232. On conts based JSA the only Social Fund payment available to you is a Crisis Loan. There is no direct entitlement to this - it is discretionary and it is given only in a crisis or disaster, hence the name.
For the other loans and grants you need to be receiving an income based benefit from DWP. The 26 weeks rule refers to a budgeting loan only.0 -
Use google to look for furniture projects in your area.
They could help you in setting out.
There are also groups like the Salvation Army, who often take in donations of furniture for people in need.
There is also Freecycle. You can place a wanted request for some of the things you need.

I've donated things in the past to a furniture project in my area which is run y a group of churches. I'm sure the furniture they have is given to people in your situation. Try Googling or looking in the Yellow Pages/phone book.0

maybe try gumtree, post a wanted ad, see if you can appeal to anyones good nature? ads are free to post
also maybe a paper ad too.
Freecycle is a good place to start. You may be surprised by whats on offer,my sister has had a few items when she 1st moved into her new place, she didnt have much money and freecycle was a godsend
freecycle is now called Freegle, so type that into google
good luck and i wish you the best in your new place:happyhear0 -
you wouldnt get a crisis loan, as they are for emergencies ie not having money for food......but anyone can apply for a budgeting loan. look up your local 'freecycle' people give away amazing things and all you have to do is collect them. a friend in a similar position kitted out their flat in about a week with really decent stuff!0
