Kichen Worktops - Maia, Workstone, Encore, Minerelle etc

Hi all,

I'm looking at worksurfaces to compliment my planned Howden's black gloss kitchen units.

Looking at something along the lines of white-ish stone like worksurfaces. Now, granite and quartz are too expensive to buy and fit.
Looking to spend around £500 on materials and my joiner would fit it.

Really want a stone/hard surface looking and have stumbled across Maia, Workstone, Minerelle etc. I know it's around 3-6mm acrylic topped chipboard, but are they any good?

I really dont like the standard cheap laminate surfaces.....

Advice welcome. Thanks in advance.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for...

They are cheaper as they are an inferior product. It all depends on how long you want them to last. Personally, I woudn't touch them with a barge pole...

What sizes do you actually need? (I don't mean 3 x 3m lengths of whatever) But the actual lengths of top required for the fit?

I had just this dilemma recently. Howdens black gloss kitchen and I wanted Earthstone but it was going to cost £1400 and I just didn't have the money.

In the end I went for Duropal laminate tops but made sure that I bought the square edged one. It's a quartz stone type and acyually looks the dog's doodahs for about £500.

It isn't Earthstone I know, but it looks the business. Honest.

Actually it's not quite finished but here's a shot that will give you an idea.

    I am so pleased I didn't spend £1000 unnecessarily.

As pimento suggests, why not go for a 28mm PP or ABS square edged laminate, it will look good and probably be more hard wearing than earthstone etc.

Sorry, what is 28mm PP or ABS square edged laminate?

Pimento, that's exactly what i want. I think length wise, i need 1x220cm, 2x40cm and 1x120cm. This is assuming they are 90degree joints (i.e. rectangles). Will be kind of a U-shaped kitchen but middle is seperated due to a range cooker.

May I ask where you got the worktop from and if poss, how much discount did Howden's give u? I got a quick quote of 80% off. Dunno if that's the norm.

    Many thanks all.

The worktops are available anywhere they sell Duropal laminates. If you can wait til I get home I can give you exact name of the colour. John Lewis have samples you can look at in their kitchen deprtment. In fact, that's where I compared Maia right next to the laminate and knew I'd be mad to spend the extra money.

As to the price of the kitchen, I don't know. I was given a whole price for the kitchen, fitting and all the associated work I had done (skimming walls and ceilings, moving a cupboard door, electrics, plumbing) so I don't know what the kitchen cost on it's own.

If you're in Essex I can recommend my bloke though. He was brilliant and came in on time and on budget.

I used this company with my units from Howdens.

the Riven is textured so doesn't show marks and is slightly glossy.

Your kitchen looks really good pimento
