Yes - in Burgess Hill !

I see why it is difficult and wish you well.

Maybe telling just outweighs silence !
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

only my brothers and parents know as they have helped us out financailly in recent months. I was very embarrassed and tackled it initially through emails but can speak to them now about it. I will not be telling anyone else

Personally, i will not be telling my parents. I have told a couple of friends who i know have been through it themselves. Actually, i found that one of my closest friends was made br last year after looking on the london gazette, i confided in her about my financial problems and she didnt tell me that she had been through it and i didnt tell her i knew she had as she obviously didnt want me to know. I think you have to tell people only if you want to and not because you feel you have to.

    Hi,

Everyone we have told have been very supportive. My parents, my wifes parents and my boss at work.

We told them all that the main reason for bankruptcy was the negative equity on our flat(We lived in a 1 bed apartment with a growing baby) and had to move to somewhere bigger but rented.

That is half the reason, we also have credit card and personal loan debt that had become unmanagable. Only a few friends know the full extent of our debt - but again they have been very supportive - I have been struggling with money for a long time and they are all happy that I'm finally getting it sorted out.

We told my parents, and husbands Uncle, but we had to tell him as we was a creditor.

We haven't told anyone else at all, including the mil, as she would tell everyone and anyone, and it's not everyone and anyones business!!

Tell who you want to tell, we personally haven't found it awkward by not telling anyone, but we didn't have to move, all we did do was get a rust bucket of a car, and we just said the other car was too expensive to repair, which everyone seems to have accepted!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do x
  • I am so glad that I found out about my dd's money problems and have been able to help her through her bankruptcy.I had the painful task of discovering how much was owed and to whom, but pleased to say we worked through it with lots of help from me reading the posts on here.I dread to think how life would be if we hadn't worked through this together.:T:T:T

    Hi there,
I told my Dad which wasn't easy and then a few days later i told my immediate family. They were great and sooooo could easily have been in the same position as me and DH. Its just the way things go and how peoples luck rides. I'm afraid my DH and mines time was up altho we both worked and still work every hour of the day, support our wonderful 3 x teenagers and try to pay our bit to society. It was just circumstance that led to our BR and it was our decision, not the creditors!
I know that this could happen to anybody at any time and I now know that it's nothing to be ashamed of.
I now have a matter of days until AD and my family ring me at least once a day to join in my countdown celebrations :)
If your family are a proper family, they will support you in everything yo do and if they don't then just ignore them and get on with it - you will be absolutely fine. The best of luck to you :)

well we told mil and step fil, and they were fantastic, they completely understood our reasons, have offered their support, have agreed not to tell anyone as its nothing interesting for the family to know about, and couldn't have been more wonderful. so I take it back about the mil! we're going to speak to my parents this weekend and I hope that they are as supportive as what mil and step fil were

Glad it went well for you indebt, good luck with your parents.

My mil almost certainly would tell everyone unfortunately, she has told everyone about sil's IVA, even though it was meant to be a secret so she has past form lol!!
