yes, assuming XP go to add/remove programs
then hunt around for add windows components and there will be an option to add outlook express.
if you're actually on vista or windows7 outlook express isn't supported so you'll have to use windows live mail which replaced it
(or thunderbird but only if you don't mind profile corruptions deleting all your emails every 6-12 months)0 -

Wrong, Outlook != Outlook Express!(or thunderbird but only if you don't mind profile corruptions deleting all your emails every 6-12 months)
What a generalised and wrong statement. Millions and Millions of users use it without problems. There might have been something wrong with your configuration. If you have a problem, then just restore last days backup ;-)
Thunderbird stores emails in mbox files, which is human readable and can be easily read and imported into other programs. OE on the other hand uses a proprietary format... Also, who still uses POP3 for their email? IMAP is the way to go and almost every email provider supports it.
OE was technically one of the worst email programs out there and thankfully MS discontinued it. It breached so many standards and made reading emails created by it a pain...0 -
It has Live installed on it but its not the same as outlook express. Thunderbird may be good for some but Im used to OE. In OE I can see how many emails are downloading, my deleted emails go into my deleted file, in thunderbird they just have a line put through them, I cant figure out how to put a signature in, have read receipts. I just want my good old outlook express back:(0

I think maybe you should take the time to get used to, and learn how to use both Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail.
Both are really good and simple to use and will probably do everything Outlook could do.
I use Windows Live Mail on both my desktop and my laptop, and Thunderbird on my Ubuntu netbook and can't really fault either.
Just because your used to something doesn't mean you shouldn't try something new, which is likely to be better.
If you have any specific questions on either program I'm sure you'll get plenty of help here for either.0 -
Agree re trying something new, and if and when I get the time I will but at the moment I just want back what I know, why should i change using something that I was perfectly happy with0

Well to be fair its really the sellers responsibility, if XP was supposed to be installed as new and clearly hasn't been properly installed then you should probably get back in touch with them. Suggesting an alternative isn't really acceptable in my opinion.
Do you have an XP disk for the laptop? Maybe a reinstall or repair install are the only option. If you've tried everything else suggested.
But I guess the best reasons for changing are
1)Alternatives won't be linked to the OS and therefore easier to repair and reinstall
2)Using up to date and therefore presumably more secure software
3)Compatibility and easy transfer of all emails and settings when you upgrade to a PC running Windows 7
4)What you've got isn't working and it might be a hassle getting it sorted :rotfl:0 -

Ok, let me fire up my Thunderbird which I use from time to time.
"In OE I can see how many emails are downloading"
I can see how many unread emails are in each subfolder, so I can't see your point. Or do you mean some kind of progress bar which tells you how many emails are being downloaded at the moment? In TB I can see it in the status bar.
"my deleted emails go into my deleted file, in thunderbird they just have a line put through them"
So it looks like you're already using IMAP, so how can you lose emails then if there is a problem with your client? Right click on the email folder an select "compact" and they will disappear. If you want to change this behaviour, go into Tools -> Settings (or Options?) -> Server Settings and find the setting "when I delete a message" and change it to whatever you want. Leave this windows open to solve the other problems below.
"I cant figure out how to put a signature in"
It's in the first settings page of your account
"have read receipts"
When writing an email look under options in the main menu.
As you can see, PEBCAK. All these problems you could have solved by a quick Google search or by looking into your settings at all. Of course, each program is different, but if nobody would try to learn new things, we would still use MS-DOS...
If you want a certain behaviour in TB, search for an extension. There are so many for almost everything.0
