Hot water not working on Combi bolier!!

Hi anyone out there have any ideas what the problem could be? When I turn on the hot tap the bolier tries to fire up but won't so No hot water will come out!! If I turn the central heating on then the hot water comes out of the taps obviously because the system is then fired up!! Any ideas of what this could be before I have to get someone in to look at it its only a few years old. My water pressure in the house is terrible even after having severn trent out to check it who claim its fine from their end and as water comes out when they turn the tap on and do there tap test they said its Not low?? Just in case this colud be part of the problem? Please any plumbers gas fitters out there if u ould advise ta in advance

Several points, There is a flow valve - no water flow - no heat, so how low is the water flow. Fill a few pint/litre jugs and time it. Water flow in the bathroom faster?

CH on then ok, but is shared with the heat chamber that the water flows into.

I would like to know how fast the hot water flows first

Note I have a combi and I'm not a plumber or boiler fitter.
  • Might sound silly but do you mean how fast does the hot water flow with the central heating running as thats the only way I get hot water?? Hot water runs very slowly and if tap on downstairs no water comes out at all upstairs but havent actually timed it yet.

If the water pressure is at least the minimum to operate the appliance, then it is an appliance fault.

Have you had the water pressure measured and do you know what it is?

How does that figure compare with manufs' spec for boiler?

    What make/model?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Has it changed recently, did you always get no water upstairs?
  • Hi have had water pressure measured by severn trent they didnt tell me figures or cant remember them lol but they said it fitted into the norm apparently!! Water pressure especially upstairs has always been like this since we moved in years ago. Hot water stopped working a month ish ago unless heating is switched on! Will have another look at boiler and try to measure flow as post 2 advised 2morro as I am off to work soon unfortunately!! thanks
  • I had a boiler that used to do the same thing, it turned out to be some sort of valve/washer type thing that was supposed to move depending on whether heating + hw or just hw only was selected but it had perished and needed replacing. Sorry I can't be more specific but it was a few years back and I can't remember what it was called. Hopefully some more plumber/boiler people will be along who can explain it a bit better than I can!

When this happened to mine it was the diverter valve, cost about $50 for plumber to repair, this was about 2 years ago.

    You were very lucky.

  • The diverter valve is a different symptom, my son changed it while I was at work the valve was about £36 and had about 5 standard connections to it. Only took him half hour (he was aged 16 at the time). See my previous posts.

You don't have any water supply..........
