Vodaphone confiscated my money1

I'm not a phone person, I can't see the keypads or displays so I'v avoided them. My wife upgraded to a Blackberry last year and gave me her old "Pay and Go". Not wanting to refuse it, I put £10 on it and put it in the car "for emergencies". Of course I've never used it, until the other day when my wife tried to call me when I was out in the car. She couldn't get through. When we asked Vodaphone about it, they said they'd closed the account for "non-use" and I'd forfeited my £10. I think that's disgraceful. Being naive I didn't realise you needed money on your phone just to accept calls.
Oh well, lesson learned, back to the treacle tins and long piece of string.

Limits apply for non usage - you could have just sent odd text once every 3 months or something. :D

Some networks don't do this other's (such as Vodafone do).

Generally if you make a call or send a text every six months it will stay active.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

You need to make a regular chargeable call to keep the number active. If you do not use the number for 180 days, the SIM is suspended but can be reactived by topping up and making a chargeable call. If the number is not used for a total of 270 days, you will lose the number and any remaining credit.

This is in Vodafone's PAYG terms and conditions.
