Heavily Subsidised. That's a laugh. Take a look at the Desire on an 18 Month, £30 a month contract with T-Mobile. They want £380 for the handset. You can buy it SIM free for £387 from Handtec. £380. That's really subsidised that is - by £7.

And if a company offered a decent service then they would not need to lock their kit because people would stay.

Ok so you buy a sim free desire from handtec for £387 but then you need to top it up with say minimum of £5 so £5 x 18 months is £90 + £387 is £477 which is more costly than the 1 from t mobile

The £380 price with T-Mobile is IN ADDITION to the £30 per month subscription. It is not the price of the handset on its own!!!

I should say so. There is literally no subsidy in that handset. It's £387 SIM free and I bet T-Mobile get them cheaper than that. And I bet its locked too.
