Can I get a refund?

I bought a fishing rod at the weekend, and the end snapped off the first time I used it.
It was from a small shop and I suspect it had been on display a long time, and had become brittle. At £50, it wasn't cheap either.
As it is obviously damaged, and was not of satisfactory quality, can I ask for a refund or do I have to accept a credit note?
I cannot find the receipt anywhere.

Think you need proof of purchase to get a refund, Ie receipt, CC statement ect

Think you would struggle with the 'brittle' argument. Many fishermen have their favoured rods for several years and have no such problems.

How did it happen? Was it whilst casting/trying to land a fish? What kind of rod was it? Fly/coarse/sea etc. Rods usually are very hardy due to the various stresses they are inevitably put through and as such are normally quite difficult to break.

Smaller stores are sometimes easier to deal with as your custom means more to them than the larger retail tycoons. Although I still agree that they may well want some form of proof that you bought the rod from them.

If you can provide more details, might be able to provide more help.

  • It takes a lot to snap a rod - what was the published test curve? What was the length and what was your intended species? What did you actually snap on - did you hook a 30lb linear or a Tesco's shopping trolley?

'Several years'? I've fished with rods 60 years old before now.

Why speculate on the cause of the problem? If you used it properly and it broke then you're due a refund.

Speculating on the cause is necessary as different types of rod could be damaged if used in an inappropriate way, even if it is fishing. For example, if I used a fly fishing rod for beach casting, it would not be unreasonable for it to snap.

Just trying to work out if it worth persuing a refund or not.

Rods do not always have a test curve. Most don't.

Length and species is totally unimportant. If the item was used in the ordinary course, then it shouldn't have snapped.

OP - you will need to prove that you purchased it from the particular shop...assuming, of course, that they don't accept that you did.
  • I think if he had a rod designed for float fishing roach, rudd and dace, he'd have a pretty hard time justifying using it for specimen carp or catfish. But thanks for the helpful suggestion. I'll remember that next time I'm on the lake in winter and use my 10 year old's rod spinning for Zander.

Absolute rubbish. There is absolutely no evidence that he has used a match rod for carp or catfish.
  • Hence asking the question...........

Sorry but that doesn't make sense.

If you had asked whether he had damaged it accidentally, that would be fair.
