Either it's an out and out scam, probably originating from West Africa, or it's some 'chancers' claiming you MAYBE due a tax refund, and if you pay them a few hundred quid up-front, they'll start work on it straight away.....

I got three in a day - all offering slightly different amounts around £960...now that *would* be a nice refund.

Apart from the address of the sites they were directing me to (hover the mouse over the link and look at the taskbar) the fact that they were all signed "Kind Regards, HMRC" told me they definately weren't real :rotfl:

    Kind regards? From the taxman?!

The bad grammar often gives them away. (The scammers not the HMRC)

Like others have said, ring HMRC directly or send a letter asking them to check your code. Letters tend to be given priority treatment over any other form of correspondence (at least they did when I was a lowly revenue assistant).

Of course it's real. The Inland Revenue have always used AOL email accounts!!!

You've probably won a lottery as well.
