Start up problem

When I turn on pc it only gets to page with writing on and wont let me go any further until i press F1 or F2
Pressing F2 starts up windows BUT screen flickers really bad and cant get onto some sites...says "certificate out of date, untrusted site etc" even for the sites like Virgin Media.
Pressing F1 takes me to "set up" like date etc and the time on there is set December 2001 ?? so i put this right and press F10 to save and all is fine! UNTIL i start up pc next time :(

Any help ? Please ? Thanks

    Hi,

could be your CMOS battery, only about £1 and easy to change, have a read here.

Here's a wee video, battery is asually a CR2032, it'll be printed on it, if going into the guts, switch off first.

The CMOS battery on your motherboard has gone flat, so every time you shut down it loses the date and time settings again. Change the battery (about £2) and all will be well.
Edit: frugal, you beat me to it (and you buy your batteries cheaper too).

The "Set up" you see sounds like the BIOS. You should not normally need to go into the BIOS, as changing settings here can easily mess up your system.

You mention that the clock is reset, this sounds like the CMOS battery on your computer has died. It is easily replaced, but involved opening the case and removing the old CMOS battery and installing a new one. If you are not confident with doing this you may be better taking it to a pc repair shop, as a borked motherboard will be expensive to replace.

The certificate errors are probably being caused by the incorrect date/time.

Regarding the screen flickering, could you post more details on this. It again could be caused by the dead CMOS battery, but could be something else.

    Hope this helps,

If you can open the case and locate the battery, then you can change it. It looks like a button cell battery, usually number CR2032-but just match it to the old one.
Therer are plenty of videos on youtube that show you how to change it-it's a five minute job. Nothing can blow up.

Although there would be very little chance of making it blow up, you will have to be careful of ESD (Electro Static Discharge), because this can be lethal to the components inside your computer.

Also, opening the case ~may~ void any warranty you have on it. Depends on the original manufacturer

Unlikely that it's still in warranty if the CMOS battery has failed. I'm guessing at least 3 years old.
