Sending phone to Malta

I am selling my phone for the first time on eBay, and have stated only UK bidders in it.

However, someone has sent me a question asking how much will it cost to send to Malta. He said he will pay by Paypal.

If he is willing to meet my price, I wouldnt mind sending it to him.

I would just like to know if anyone has sent to Malta before? Do they have a history like the nigerians?

  • The Royal Mail no longer provides additional cover for mobile phones when sending abroad. The maximum amount of compensation is just £32.

    I wouldn't send a mobile abroad.

Thanks for that. Didn't realise they had changed it.

  • If you are even considering sending a phone to Malta, insist on Western Union as a payment method. Any other method leaves you wide open to fraud.

Western Union is banned from eBay.

Yes, I know that. (I never meant to thank you for the post, i was trying to hit the quote button)

What other payment method do you think is non-reversable? I am open to suggestions as to how we can prevent the seller from getting ripped. Paypal, CC, cheque, all reversable. All the seller has to do is suggest WU as a payment method in an email, and see what the 'buyer' does.

Fraudulant listing is also banned in ebay, but ebay don't 'police' auctions.

From the T&Cs you signed up to :-

    "eBay is Only a Venue.

3.1 eBay is not an auctioneer. Although we are commonly referred to as an online auction web site it is important to realise that we are not a traditional auctioneer. Instead, the Site acts as a venue which allows registered users to offer, sell, and buy just about anything which is legal, at any time, from anywhere, in a variety of price formats. We do not review listings provided by users, we never possess the items offered through the Site and we are not involved in transactions between buyers and sellers. As a result, we have no control over the quality, safety or legality of the items listed, the truth or accuracy of the listings, the ability of sellers to sell items or the ability of buyers to pay for items. Do not assume that the offer, sale, purchase, export or import of any item is valid and legal simply because it is listed on the Site. We are not responsible for ensuring that buyers and sellers actually complete a transaction. You accept sole responsibility for the legality of your actions under laws applying to you."

Seller can, legally, just tell the 'buyer' hes not selling the phone, as no contract has been agreed until the seller accepts the buyers offer. Remember, ebay is NOT an auction.

Since the OP would not be covered for loss against any phone worth more than £32 I think the payment method is immaterial really. Just don't open the bidding for overseas bidders.

  • Wouldn't it be easier for the OP just to say sorry this item is only available to eBayers in the UK.

Surely the Malta eBayer could report the seller if he/she asks for payment to be made by Western Union.

    .

Well,If I was the bidder I would report the seller as a potential scammer. Offering to accept a method banned on ebay and with a reputation as being the scammers friend... looks dodgier than a week old salmon sandwich.

Just imagine if they asked that question on here, auction says paypal accepted but seller suggests using Western Union instead..we would all be saying report them and run a mile.

But Paypal is a bigger scamming tool than WU, probably cos we all know the problems with the Nigerians in the past, and its now alledgedly not allowed on Ebay. Although I could point you to a few hundred auctions that take WU as a payment method on ebay as of now (most, if not all, from the Chinese scammers)

The idea IS to get the buyer to run a mile. Chances of this being a scam, especially with paypal involved, is huge. Easiest way is to refuse to sell the phone outside of the UK, second easiest is to refuse to sell the phone, third is to have cash in hand before you send it.

Its not like you can take the IMEI, and block the phone if a fraud occurs, or go round to the guys house and get your money back.
