Domain email forwarding/reply question

Chuffy Posts: 1,254 Forumite
Hi, I have a domain only registration with 1&1 that allows email forwarding for any number of emails I wish to create. E.g. I create bob@ilovesheep.co.uk and have it forwarded to my gmail account. Is it possible to reply to any emails sent to my 'bob' email address using the 'bob' email and not the gmail I have forwarded it to. I would like to do this using either gmail itself or Outlook 2007. When I try to change the settings in gmail, it says From: xx@gmail.com; on behalf of; bob [bob@ilovesheep.co.uk].

TIA.

You have to make the other one the default address, then it will be the other way around, From: bob@ilovesheep.co.uk and Sender: xx@gmail.com

This used to be possible in gmail but I believe they changed this settings so it does as mentioned above with "on behalf of" now. I think it's now a chargable service for the option to get "bob"

I don't really use gmail that much for main accounts, but I'll have a look may be possible

EDIT.

Just noticed the settings in gmail for "account / import"

I found this, would this option not work ? Simply put the dot in the box as opposed to "use default"

When receiving a message:
Reply from the same address the message was sent to
Always reply from default address

Why not just drop the whole web based email client and get a proper email client like Outlook or if you are really pushed maybe Thunderbird? You can setup your email much easier and is much more flexible.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Ta for the replies. I've got Outlook 2007 & I use gmail as my main email but on occasion I want to reply back from the domain email (I use it for marketing/spam and sometimes need to reply to unsubscribe/contact the company etc.). Lil, my settings are you suggest but it still comes with the 'on behalf of' bit attached.
Tronator, I will try your suggestion and report back...

You can set gmail to send through the 1and1 SMTP server, go to settings, accounts and import, and click send mail from another address. You can find the 1and1 settings in their FAQ. I think you might need to have one mailbox set up as a mailbox as well as a forward to do that though.

Thats the one, very handy.

If you have added bob@... to your list of accounts in gmail make it your default email address and use that option to handle incoming mail.

It does as mentioned before add the text "sent on behalf of". But the mail appears to come from, and further replies will go to "bob@..." It depends on the mail client how prominent the on behalf bit is. Recipients with you address in their contacts list may not notice it at all.
You can remove the sent on behalf of if you have your own mailserver but this is not usually available if you are just using a domain name with email forwarding.

Thanks Basill

Seems Google Apps is a possible solution to this, I've just searched it myself.

Here's a Google search if anyone wants a lengthy read
http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&source=hp&q=gmail+remove+on+behalf+of&meta=&aq=0&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=gmail+remove+on+be&gs_rfai=&fp=a14e1efbc109ce83

However, to support Basills comment without access to server this is the statement I found (seems entirely based on server and local mail client settings)

Outlook recognizes that 'from" and "sender" are different and thinks it's being helpful with that "On behalf of" message. I've noticed that if the recipient is using Mozilla Thunderbird then you still see "From" and "Sender" in the normal brief header but at least it doesn't "On behalf of" when you hit reply. If I receive on my GroupWise system at work then there is no sign of the Gmail address unless I go digging into the full header looking for "Sender:".

I`ve had a search around my own Domain settings (123reg) It is only possible to use their outgoing mail server if you pay for a mailbox, however for some reason once you have a mailbox it seems it is no longer possible to forward that email address.
At the moment I can live with the on behalf....
