Hi,
I bought a new Lack coffee table, it was cheap and it fitted exactly in the space I had. I know it is not solid wood and for £15 it is not bad but yesterday my son was playing with his toys in it and one of the toys went straight through and made a hole a few cm in diameter.

I don't know whether I have the right to go back to Ikea and get a refund or do I have to live with it? I think that the table should be able to handle a 3 year old playing on it with a few toys. I have to say, it has an unbelievably thin top surface.

Any advice?

Thanks

Whenever I've been unsure as to whether to take something back I've phoned the shop and asked first. You get some idea of where you stand before carting it back to the shop. Is there a number on the back of your receipt that you can call?
  • It's not really a play surface, it's for putting a few cups and a magazine on - I would imagine that your LO must have been thumping around quite a lot to mark the veneer, so I don't really think it is reasonable to expect a refund (but I'm not IKEA).

But it wouldn't hurt to contact IKEA customer services, although the wait involved for refunds in store is pretty substantial - they may have some helpful advice for you. The information should be on the receipt or in the back of the catalogue.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

My boyfriend sat on my LACK and made it warped in the middle.. lol - They aren't great for playing on or sitting on.. otherwise, I had one before and it lasted about 6 yrs with no issues..

Can't you say you found it damaged when you took it out the box?
    9/70lbs to lose :)
  • Like a couple of others have said - perhaps phone up Ikea.

Have to say - I don't think Ikea quality is what it used to be. Baby's bedroom chest of drawers is from Ikea and the bottom is sagging and the front of the draw has come off.

In the early 80's when glass coffee tables were all the rage, I broke my parents' table by banging a toy on it.

I thought it would be a bit solid, I have a desk that I bought from Ikea about 8 years ago made of the same material and it has been carted around thumped and more.

I took the table back to Ikea, no queue for returns (never really is on weekdays) and told the person what happened. She just gave me a refund so I guess I was lucky.

True. But no need for the particular poster to suggest being a liar either.

I agree though, call them up first of you're worried.

Unless the "toys" in question were a hammer and a mallet? ;)
