I brought one of those 3 inch pots of Sweetcorn from the garden centre last year with 4 seedlings grouped tightly together. I stuck it in the garden as it was (minus the pot of course) just to see what they did and ended up with a good 10 or so cobs altogether so not too bad. This year I'm growing my own from seed and planting about 15 plants so should have plenty.0

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I thought it was probably best to keep my sweetcorn question together with this thread. Is it too early to plant my sweetcorn out? I planted 12 plants yesterday and covered them with plastic bottles but then I started to worry that it was too early. Should I start more as a back up?"Who’s that tripping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.

I think you'll be pushing it, especially as cold weather is forecast this weekend, but if they do survive, they should be well away.
I haven't put mine out, lets put it that way, but that doesn't mean they won't survive in your garden, or even mine come to that, I'm just minimising the chance for them to be damaged.
Mid May is supposed to be the right time, but that's in the middle of the south, we're close to that date as well, but you only need one night to be the doom of them all.
Learning how far you can push it, is a part of gardening, so good luck.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Bit early for sweetcorn, ours are just germinating in an unheated greenhouse and will go out in a few weeks once less risk of cold weather.
You might be able to nurse them through with the plastic bottle cloches, but I tried that with 6 plants last year from around the 3rd week of April and lost all but 2.

Thanks, when I reached for a jumper yesterday I thought I'd planted them too early. I'll watch them this weekend then decide whether to plant more or not. It says the end of May on my packet and I'm in the midlands. Oh well like you say you have to learn, patience is not one of my strong points and I've had a bed ready for the sweetcorn for over 2 weeks now. I'm new to growing veg...so new I had to ask someone if the green leaves in my potato rows were weeds or potatoes. Lucky I asked as I would of ended up pulling out my fledgling potatoes:rotfl:"Who’s that tripping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.

I don't know if this link will work, but here were some of my last years sweetcorn in pots, in with the various tomatoes and french lavender (also in pots). The garden is south facing and I'm in the SE.

We've all been there at the start. Even a few years in now I just spent a while debating if some of the stuff in the beds are weed seedlings or not lol.
Got what looks like a row of brassica seedlings sprouting now, but I didn't plant any outside yet!!!
DD1 and 2 looked guilty when I asked about them they said they "may" have sown some seeds but can't remember what. Defo in a line and don't look like any weeds I have seen before, have that sort of "cress" look about them.
