Help with growing sweetcorn

My veg growing at the moment consists of a box of mushrooms and a red pepper plant doing welll on the kitchen window sill! I would love to have a go at sweetcorn but it needs to be in a pot. I have a sturdy plastic recycling box about 3ft square and 2ft deep. Would this be big enough?

Thanks :)

Mine are going to go into a trug but you need to keep it weighted as it gets pretty top heavy. You also need at least two plants so that they pollunate each other.

I got two plants at my local bootfair for 45p!

if you've only got a small space and limited growing area why not try a higher cropping vegetable like tomatoes or courgettes.

grr didnt see the post about lidl till i got back! Got cherry tomato, sweetcorn and lettuce..Also some kid's runner bean seeds lol
  • Hate to put you off but our sweetcorn grows to about 6ft high and it needs to grow in a square. We have an allotment so space is no problem.

I don't think you'll have much luck with just a couple of plants - they are wind pollinated and you need to grow a patch of them, even a row won't work. They really are too big for pots.

what would be the minimum amount of plants i would need?

told you i was new to this!
  • Don't know the minimum but I have 24 growing in pots and will follow on with another 24 later. I would have thought about 10 at least but others may suggest more or less.

I grew sweetcorn in pots last year. I used tomaoto sized pots and some of those brown pots you can get from a 99p shop. One in each pot, 5 plants (seed put straight in the pots) and grouped so pots were touching. Plus 3 in the ground behind the 5 pots. The ones in the pots grew better. I fed them with tomato food. I ate the sweetcorn without cooking it; it was really tasty:D

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
