Old disputed debt (Vodaphone)

Over three years ago I ended a contract with Vodaphone for my mobile phone.
I followed instructions and told them in writing that I was giving 30 days notice of ending the contract, as per their terms and conditions (the initial contract term had expired). For at least one more month (I can't remember exactly now) they continued to claim the direct Debit so, having already cancelled the contract) I stopped the direct debit. They then sent me further bills saying that I was now in arrears.
I contacted them (or they contacted me) I told them I had cancelled the contract in writing and they agreed they had received the letter however they hadn't actioned it because I had also asked for my 'pac' number and I hadn't used it. I explained that I decided against transferring my number.
At no time prior to this was it explained to me that if I didn't use the 'pac' number the contract would not be cancelled.
They stated I was still liable, I disagreed and I heard no more.
Last week I received a letter from Cabot stating they had taken over this part of the Vodaphone business and required payment of my outstanding bill. A few days later, I received a phone call from this man who quickly mumbled who he was and demanded that I confirm my postcode and date of birth. His voice sounded aggressive and I hung up. He called back and left a message on my answerphone requesting (demanding) I returned his call.
Am I liable for this money?
Anyone had any similar experience?
Are they likely to carry on chasing me?
Am I likely to have to pay?
I am not normally easily intimidated but I really don't want to talk to this person as he sounded really aggressive. I did send an email to the company, not explaining all this but simply stating that I do not owe this money.
Thanks in advance for any information, advice or guidance.

The letter you got with your PAC will have said that if the PAC is not used within 30 days, it expires and your contract continues. This is standard for all operators, your disagreeing with it unfortunately did not change this fact. As therefore you didn't properly cancel the contract either by giving appropriate notice or using the PAC, you are liable for the bill. Cabot won't easily give up, have a search on the forum (not just this part of it) - there are many people who have had the experience of dealing with them.
If you repost this (or PM a board guide and ask for it to be moved) on Debt-Free Wannabe you might get better advice for dealing with Cabot.0 -
Thanks for that
Will Repost - I wasn't sure which was the best place for it.0 -
Also, Vodafone will still bill you after your contract ends as their billing cycle bills for extra used minutes etc the month after they are used.
I'd get an exact breakdown of monies, and bills owed. I'd imagine you owe them atleast something.0
