I'll try explain this best I can lol

I am with EON for both Gas & Electric, using prepayment meters and I put in £20 per week EACH. I have asked & asked for it to be lowered as its killing me paying that much. Anyway I had lost my login details for EON but found them, logged in to a screen showing me this -

View Your Latest Bill
Please select an account below.
ElectricityAccount Number: XXXX
Address XXX
Last Payment£10.00 on 21/04/2010
Current Balance £1,050.49 credit

GasAccount Number: XXXX
Address XXXX
Last Payment£10.00 on 21/04/2010
Current Balance £125.92 credit

Now bear in mind this is a prepayment meter so I put credit onto cards and put in the meter.

I contacted EON to ask why I was so much in credit, I havent had a bill since June 09 either. They replied with the following -

I have checked your accounts and the credit is building up to pay your next bill.

Now I dont get Bills.... its prepayment. The meters were read for the first time a few weeks ago and this is how it was showing after it had been done.

Am I right or wrong in thinking that a prepayment meter is paying upfront as I am paying as I use really.. I aint being funny but I know I have paid too much and I aint really keen on letting them keep something that I could really do with IF I am right.

Anybody know anything that may enlighten me?

Thank You in advance :)

Hi scotlady - Wow, you are spending £2000+ a year on Gas & Elec ?

OK - WRITE to Eon heading the letter Complaint, enclosing copies of your online statements and the reply you recieved stating that you were building up credit for later bills, and also demand bills from June '09.

It's not unknown for the Computer billing systems of all the Utility Co's, to issue fantasy bills with huge debits or Credits, but your spend of over a £1000 a year on Elecric. in a gas heated dwelling is so over the top, that it's very likely that the credit figures on your statement are correct - So you want that money back
    Best of luck

Thanks I'll get it written today. I didnt think it was right. Seriously its killing me paying that, I pay the same every week and I changed to them almost 18 months ago.

I did ask about getting the meters changed and they said £50 per meter.

Do you know if I moved to someone else would I be charged by them? I aint being funny but would rather if I had to pay it I'd rather pay it to someone else. Do disrespect meant but I just think that EON are wrong in the way they are handling this with me.

Anyway waffling now but thanks again :)

Hi again scotlady - Of course, one way to get your overpayments back from EON would be to change supplier. Your final Bill would then show a credit balance for which EON would send you a cheque, E-v-e-n-t-u-a-l-l-y

The one thing required when changeing from a key meter to a credit meter is a proven good credit history It's likely that you have a key meter because some previous occupier of your home ran up debt with the Utility Co.

However, if indeed your huge credits have built up due to EON's errors and they just hung onto the money till you complained, there is a chance that you can lean on them to change the meter for free as a measure of recompense.
Wait till they have confirmed the error in writing, then write to them expressing your anger at the amount of your money they have held unlawfully, and that if they do not change the meter without charge to stop this happening again, you will move to another supplier.
    All the best
PS Once you have your credit meter, there is nothing to stop you changeing supplier anyway

Cool thanks. I'm a little wary as when I moved from Npower to EON I had a credit of just over £300 and managed to get £54 from them, they "amended" figures on the bill saying it was a clerical error. Just dont wanna lose this large amount over another "clerical error". I'll keep you updated :)

    Hi scotlady

You are absolutely correct, in that, with Prepayment Meters you are paying for energy in advance.

However, we still have a legal obligation to provide statements which show the amount of energy used, the prices it has been charged at and all payments made. They are not bills but a summary of your account.

As you have registered your account with our website, statements will not be sent through the post but can be viewed online.

Emails are sent to the address registered with our website advising a statement is ready to view each time one is issued. These statements can be downloaded and printed if you prefer paper copies.

When was the last statement produced? Prepayment statements are usually issued at 6 monthly intervals and it may be some of the credit will be offset against the next statement.

What type of Prepayment Meters do you have? If they are key (electric) and Quantum (gas), readings are sent to us each time you top up via an electronic message that comes directly from your meter.

However, we still need to visit your property periodically to check the meters are ok. Was a statement issued following the meter reader calling a few weeks ago?

Regardless of this, I would take dogshome's advice and contact us. Ask for a statement to be issued to the very latest meter readings. This will bring your account bang up to date.

If there are still discrepancies, then we can investigate further.

Another useful task will be to take a note of the settings on each meter.

You can do this by pressing the buttons on the front of both meters and making a note of the info displayed on the individual screens. There's a section on our website to help guide you through this if you are unsure.

Tell us what the settings are and we can check the meter is set up correctly. For instance, the prices for your energy are correct and there is no debt set on the meter.

As I said, it's important you keep talking to us about this. Drop an email to the address in my Profile if you would like me to take a look as will be happy to help.

    Hiya,

The last one is showing June 09. The guy was out a few weeks ago to get readings and its been updated now. Its saying the next statement is due Sept 2010.

Both meters are cards, the electric one is meant to be getting changed to Key meter soon.

I'll get a note of whats on the meters and send u it in message if thats ok with you.

Gotta run to town first though so will do when I get back.

    Thanks for helping :)

    Hi scotlady

No problem at all. Am happy to help whenever convenient to you.

Sounds as though your electric meter is old technology and could certainly do with updating. In this case, the info on our website will not be much help. Should be ok for the gas though.

Don't worry as I will go through it all with you once I have your details. :)

  • You will get a bill. I had a problem with Eon where I was on a prepayment meter however my payments where not going onto my account, they were actually still going to my previous supplier N-Power! I only realised this when I got a bill for a few hundred pound when I left the property. I was really confused with this as how could I get a bill when I paid as I went along!?! Eon will produce your bill when you move using the end meter reading. In theory it should add up and your bill will match the credit ie. £0 balence or you could be in credit if you have some money left on your meter. However you are paying a hell of a lot and prepayment meter is not the way to go! I would request getting this changed to a normal meter on monthly direct debit. Hope this is clear. Good luck. xx
