wheel fell off

as said there would have been some considerable noise and wheel wobble before all the nuts feel off and should have stopped.
More training needed for the driver.
As far as the garage goes they were doing her an unpaid favour bit of a grey area. If you really want to take it further you need to seek professional advice.Google gives you answers use it.........0 -
Agree with waynedance, could go either way, let the lawyers argue it out. Is there even any proof that someone from the garage put their hands on the car? That said, it would appear to be a large embarassment for the garage if it got out.
Although unlucky to be in that situation I think the girl was quite lucky really that herself or no one was injured and nothing else was damaged.0 -

Further advice is off course the way to go, but just for the OP's info;
A few years back an elderly female driver drove into a filling station where a friend of mines worked. She said she needed to buy oil for her car as the light had came on, 'it was always doing this!'
My friend sold her the oil, and at HER request poured the container into the engine. Off she went.
A little while later, the same woman came in and demanded to see the manager, apparently the car broke down further down the road, too much oil in the car apparently, friend knew very little about cars, oil & dipsticks so poured a LOT of oil in.
Long story short, engine had to be replaced, filling station were taken to court and ordered to pay costs!0 -
I have mixed feelings on this one. They should have done it properly as it's such a simple job but at the same time they were basically doing a favour, and all that will happen is that the garage won't help the next person with a similar issue. I had a garage remove a wheelnut for me once free of charge, if they'd have got in trouble for it previously they wouldn't have done it.
Chances are if it went to court the garage would have to pay, but it really shouldn't be that way.0 -

Police did see it, they attended and arranged the tow truck to take the car home.
Thanks to all the people who have provided some helpful comments.
To all of those who were blessed with thorough experience and knowledge of everything from the day they were born, well done, keep it up. You've no need for the benefit of hindsight.
So, yes, she should have realised something was going wrong when the wheel came loose but she's not been driving long, and thought better to drive home. Turned out to be the wrong decision, but it was made to the best of her ability at the time.
There's no chance of it going to court. It's not the aim to ruin the business, claim loads of compensation and get them a bad name. They've been going for years and are a well-respected local firm. Hopefully they'll give the fitter a kick and he'll be a bit more conscientious in future. Hopefully he'll still help out people if and when he can.Anyway, this must be a troll thread.
Why would someone go to a garage, wanting work done, but have no money
Finally, it's not a troll thread. She went to the tyre fitters as she had problems with a tyre. She had no money on her, but that isn't the same as refusing to pay. They could have invoiced her, or she could have come back and paid later.
She asked for help and someone (fitter or manager, I don't know) was willing to help out as they saw fit. I've had plenty of help from strangers over the years - tools borrowed from a garage in Scotland to I could tighten the chain on my motorbike for the 800mile ride home, filling a waterbottle when I've been out cycling, free bus ride when I got caught in a torrential downpour with the kids, and more. And I try to help others where I can, too. It's all part of being in a community.0
