no the tyre place are liable for all costs

all tyre places recommend rechecking wheel nuts after 50miles

    No they aren't.
There was no contract to do the work at all. She couldve changed the wheel herself.

Well that's rich isn't it? It's the customers fault that the fitter didn't do the job properly!

Sounds like they took a lacksadaisical approach because it was a favour, rather than a paid job. They are still just as liable though.
How exactly was she a customer.

Anyway, this must be a troll thread.
Why would someone go to a garage, wanting work done, but have no money.

do we know if it was the correct spare wheel that was fitted? was it the original wheel that came with the car from the factory? some wheels have different shaped holes to take different nuts, some flat some conical.

how can she prove that it was this garage that carried out the wheel change if there was no invoice? as far as the garage are aware this never happened.
    ...work permit granted!

assuming it was the correct spare wheel i reckon the garage will pay to avoid bad press and give the fitter in question a good slapping.

have been here before and higher management will always pay to keep things sweet.

nuts are something to keep checking at least 10 times a day:)

Yep she could have and if it had fallen off she would have been responsible.

But, she didn't, the garage did and the duty of care they owed her still exists even though they did it for free.

I think she noticed the nail whilst near the tyre place and quite reasonably sought advice from them, they offered to fit the spare and the rest is history as they say

Does a contract exist between you and the garage? Or did the tyre fitter see a young 17 year old with no cash, who wanted a tyre fitting on the side and go on a frolic of his own, outside of his employment in the hope of being paid in kind.

Perhaps you should consider buying some breakdown cover for your daughter if she's not capable of changing a tyre. Next time it could be the side of the motorway

Also bear in mind a wheel will not just "fall off", the next time she hears strange noises coming from the car to stop and investigate the source

Good point, a few months back I swapped my wheels and headed for a trackday 200 miles away.

40 miles from home a rumbling started through the steering wheel, a few miles later it got worse.

We stopped at the side of the road and found my front wheel was loose and had lost a wheel bolt and the rest were about to join it.

Completely my fault but the reason I now check my wheel bolts everytime with my torque wrench.

Wait till you see the hassle caused when they OVER tighten them (pictures on forums of the work of blow torches and angle grinders).

TBH changing a wheel is one of the easiest things you can do on a car, even a 17 year old girl could do it, she just needs to be guided through doing it by someone who knows how as practice to gain the confidence to do it when the worst happens.
