I still think it's important to consider the job. A Customer Service Assistant (shelf stacker)
would look ridiculous in a suit, even at interview.
My husband is a MD and wears a suit everyday but when he goes to the Head Office in France he is usually the only one in a suit. They dress a lot more casually over there.
BERFFRO: I am sorry it didn't work out for you. Have you considered getting help from your GP for your panic attacks. I suffered with them a few years ago and they came back with a vengeance at Christmas so I have been trying different treatments since then and I'm pleased that I am now turning the corner.
Good luck for your future interviews.

Thanks for your kind words, It's the first time anything like that has ever happened to me! I'm gonna see how my other interviews go first before I take it any further as i'm hoping it was just a one-off.

BERFFRO Don't feel stupid you couldn't help what happened at the time. So many people would rather fall down a hole than speak in front of a large group of people. You are not alone in finding that situation difficult!

Thanks, I still feel a bit stupid but on one hand i'm wondering how my ability to speak in a large group decide's on my ability to perform at the job. The job i applied for was on a meat counter, where i had over 11 years experience of! The questions asked in this group interview were:-

    Who are you?
    What have you been doing?
Why do you want to work for us?(fair enough question)
    Moment most proud of?
If you won a million pounds, What would you do and why?
If you could invite any one for dinner how would it be and why?
If you could be any item off the supermarket shelf, What would you be and why?

Then we were given a item to sell, and advised to be as imaginative as we can!

That was it for me i left before it got to my turn, I think i would have been alright if it was just the interviews and me! But nevermind it done with now:(

    Blah Blah blah

Why do you want to work for us?(fair enough question)I think I could be an asset to the team here and like the energy of the store
Moment most proud of? Acting as midwife in the rain forest n Belize
If you won a million pounds, What would you do and why? Spend half of it on booze, drugs and woman and squander the rest - because I like the idea of working here so much I wont need the money
If you could invite any one for dinner how would it be and why? Karen Carpenter it would save me cooking
If you could be any item off the supermarket shelf, What would you be and why? A can of beer - I like getting drunk

Then we were given a item to sell, and advised to be as imaginative as we can!

so you see I would have stuffed it big style, you can't say you would be worse than me - no-one is going to believe you.

It could be worse, you could have been asked to use coloured pens to draw a shape which reflected how you felt, or to choose an object and to write how you felt about it.

Admittedly that was a team building day rather than an interview, but let's just say it didn't go well for me ... I left the room rather than share the feelings of murderous rage which rose to the surface ...

I worked as a "shelf stacker" as you decide to call it for a while and I got the job wearing a suit and I think everybody that got the jobs wore similar.

Plenty of my colleagues were used to professional environments where you would wear suits...some were just getting through the recession, others just wanted something part time whilst looking after the kids, others were downgrading before retirement. Also the younger members of staff were nearly all doing college or degree courses.

Supermarket workers aren't all thick chavs, quite a few are comfortable in suits and cared about their personal appearance.

Another one here for smart clothes for an interview.

The only difference I would go for is - management (even lower mang, supervisor etc) - MUST have suit.

Shop floor workers - don't need to have a suit, black trousers and shirt will do (as not to look overdressed).

But how you turn up to an interview makes the first impression, and if you imagine yourself in a place of an interviewer - if there are 2 people with matching qualification and experience, who would you pick? One that did look like he made an effort, thought it through and did his best or one that turned up in jeans?

Jeans would tell me personally that this person is not going to put in any extras. Any extra effort or time or thought.

Which might be not needed for many jobs, but if you have more then one applicant you will go for the safe choice. And that is the keen person. And it is very rare to get one applicant for a job in normal times, never mind in these hard times.

Speaking from the side of someone is involved in interviewing and selecting staff, If someone cannot be bothered to turn up in smart clothes e.g. pressed shirt, tie, pressed trousers and clean shoes, then they tend to find they have a very short interview followed by a rejection letter. If you cannot make an effort to get the job the the question is what effort will you put into ensuring your work is of a decent standard.

How can anyone be ''not very keen on suits''??:rotfl:

I wear my armani suits even when im just doing my mid week tescos shopping,
so the idea of someone not wearing a suit to a job interview is juts ridiculous and absurd!
