Front tyres for Clio 2, why are Michelin's +£26 for mine?

Point being that cheap tyres can be a pennywise, pound foolish approach. The longer stopping distances mean you are more likely to have a bump and have all the associated costs that go with it. You were discounting premium tyres by stating that all tyres on the road should be safe - and yes, they are. But some are safer than others and that is well worth thinking about.
For the record my last car had "Infinity" tyres all round. The current one came with goodyears & I've not had to replace em yetProud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
Of all the forums on the MSE site the motoring page scares me the most.
We start with the quote that 2 Barums cost about £150 - as if.
Various other quotes on cheapest is best (don't try to stop behind me on a wet road, you will pay dearly).
But the prize must go to the person who quotes a test from Practical Classics Magazine who tested an old Mini on its original 10" wheels using crossplies against radials, real 70's stuff particularly when you consider that the author is still of the opinion that Dunlop is a premium tyre.
Cheap far eastern tyres are best - not yet.
You really do get what you pay for, there is no moneysaving in tyres, just decide on a brand and shop round for the best price.0 -

If it was an argument based on which would give the best performance then fair enough, but we are talking about keeping it legal for the lowest price
I disagree. I don't think this forum's about getting the cheapest, it's about getting what I want for the best price. I'm fortunate that I'm comfortable, my last car cost a fortune and rear tyres were upwards of £280 each depending on what I wanted but I always got the best deal on them regardless.0 -

That was me, and the tyres tested were modern! Albeit the Camacs were x-ply the remaining tyres were radials. Incidentally, the premium tyres in that test were the yokos.....
It was used as an expression that not all tyres are the same which is what the previous poster seemed to be indicating they believedProud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
I will definately be buying at least mid range tyres in the future. The Conti's seem very good, done about 150miles in them and very happy. I don't think I will bother with the tracking, the car is not pulling either side, I'll just keep an eye on the tread wear.pstuart wrote:just decide on a brand and shop round for the best price.
I agree with you on not scrimping on tyres, but I disagree with above. I did that originally - I decided on Michelin's but after finding out that they are dissproportionately more expensive than other premium tyres for my size, I went for another brand but within the 'premium' category bracket.
I now think it's better to decide on which category of tyre you want, e.g. budget, mid range, premium etc, and then see what's best value for money, for your own size and check reviews.0
