Living alone and cooking for one is starting to prove very wasteful and costly for me. I don't have time to shop frequently unfortunately so I often freeze things after cooking in batches.. At the moment I mainly freeze bolognaise. I wonder if anyone had any other ideas for things that can be frozen and reheated.

I'll add this to the existing thread on batchcooking to give you more ideas ;)

My son is 13 and he needs more meals than the rest of us and I have been batch cooking then vacuum packing pasta bol, curry and mince to be topped with mash before eating, what else can I prepare and leave for a growing lad?

I apologise if I am in the wrong place but reading a few threads I though this was the place, If Im in the wrong place could you please tell me where to post?

    Thank you

How about HM pizza - pretty sure they would freeze. You could also make the mash and freeze that. HM burgers?

    Hi mealone,

You're in the right place. I have two teens but I don't often batch cook specifically for them but I do make single portions of homemade 'ready meals' (soups/lasagne/cottage pie/quiche/stews and casseroles etc) quite often so that anyone who needs something in a hurry or for whatever reason isn't eating with the rest of the family can easily lift them out of the freezer and defrost them when they want to. I also freeze any leftovers from meals in portion sizes for them too. It also helps to have a designated area in the freezer where they know they'll find hm ready meals to save them pulling the whole thing apart when they're hungry and not being able to fit it back in again.

Going to do some batch cooking over next couple days for freezer. As well as usual was thinking of some pies and maybe a beef wellington, and calzones. Can these be made and frozen and if so would they need to be cooked first?

  • I'd cook the calzone lightly, just enough to cook the bread properly and then use reheating time to warm and brown everything. Same with the pie, do an already cooked filling and just cooked pastry. Not sure about the wellie, I'm guessing it's the same, but have never made one, so i don't know.

  • Ok this may be a stupid question but i haven`t tred batch cooking yet, still not that good at cooking from scratch yet.

Anyway my question is when you batch cook food and freeze it, do you have to fully thaw the food out before cooking or do you cook it from frozen??

  • Goes straight in the microwave frozen for me. Not sure if that's right or not but I've got an iron stomach anyway. :rotfl:
