I want to leave BT!

Hi,
The problem is, I'm on an 18 month contract on bt Total broadband option 3 and I've 10 months left on my contract...
I am getting awful speeds with bt which is not ideal for studying. I really want to switch to someone who has a better speed (Virgin comes to mind).
Are there any ways to get out of this contract without getting a massive termination fee through the letterbox? I'm really sick and tired of these speeds. I've been searching around google for an accurate amount bt will charge and found that they will charge me 24.99 (my broadband monthly cost) for every month left in my contract in a hard lump sum. (That would work out 250 quid). Believe me, I'm tempted to fork out just to get rid of bt.
Thing is I applied for a special discount to get my connection fee wavered if I went with an 18 month contract. In the initial letter I received it states; "You now get: a full discount off our standard line connection price of 122.50GBP. All you need to do is pay your line rental each month for 18 months." Does that mean that if I cancel my contract early, they will also charge me for the line connection?
Also, I was wondering if this may work; If I phoned Virgin (or another broadband provider who gives better speeds than 56k) and said to them that I really want to switch, and that I would sign an 18month (or 24month) contract with them if they pay my bt termination fee. Just a thought... I'm really getting desperate!
Any ideas of what I can do?:snow_laug

You have to pay if you cease your line rental before the contract ends.
Details of all BT,s early termination charges can be found here
http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/dynamicmodules/pagecontentfooter/pageContentFooterPopup.jsp?pagecontentfooter_popupid=26746&s_cid=con_FURL_termcharges
No other supplier will agree to pay the termination charges.
Have you spoken to BT to see if the speed can be improved?0 -
OP please post your router line statistics. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

My advice would be to first attempt to improve your current broadband speeds there are variety of ways to attempt this. There may be a way you can improe your current speed without having to fork out large sums of money to do so. a good start would be by giving penryhn your line stats0
