micra failed MOT need new car
Options
Would you keep a car if you only drove 1600 miles a year?
I have just paid £150 for welding to get my 1995 Micra through its MOT.
My mechanic said that he did not expect it to pass next year as the corrosion will be worse than this year.
There is also corrosion that is not part of the MOT that would cost £200 to fix.
Basically run it into the ground and buy another car, says he.
I filled the tank up and he said the petrol was worth more than the car:rotfl:
A few facts, my wife and I are retired and get free bus travel and I only drove 1600 miles in the past year, I only use the car for shopping and once a week to go to the bingo, as there is no convenient bus for that.
Any suggestions for a replacement car or should I just give up car ownership all together?
The tax and insurance run out on the 30th Sept so I will run it till then.
I am going to work out how much it cost me to run it for the past year, I might be cheaper getting taxis when there are no buses.

A car does give some element of freedom, but taxi's do look to be the answer in your case.Mortgage free
Vocational freedom has arrived0 -
Surprised a 95 Micra is rusting so badly.
Could grocery shopping online be an option? This would cut out one need for the car.0 -
Depending on where you live I would look at things like streetcar uk, hertz short term rental and whipcar. Plus the cost of getting a taxi.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I've a car in the garage that did 1000 miles last year, it's not been used properly since last June but is about to be retaxed and returned to the road to do a few miles during the summer.
We've got 3 cars, 1 is used everyday, 1 most weekends and the other just lives in the garage, however, keeping the 2 fun cars costs very little and it's not worth getting rid of them in my opinion.0 -

Economically the answer is run the car until the next MOT and then get rid and use taxis etc when you need them.
BUT only you can know how much you value the additional freedom car ownership gives you and how much you are prepared to pay for it.0 -
You could add up how much it costs you in tax, insurance, mot, petrol and how much it costs you on average a month to maintain it e.g if it costs £350 one month for welding and £100 for tyres add that all up and divide by 12.
If it would be cheaper to take cabs every month than the figure you come up, then no it's not worth running one on financial grounds. I've known a couple of people use streetcars to rent the odd car for an hour or two and been happy with that - but I'm not sure if that's a London thing?Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
Surprised a 95 Micra is rusting so badlyMicra's of that age do enjoy oxidising, the sils can rot really badly
and they don't stand up to a little pointed thing poked into the sill.
This year the drivers side, next year the passenger side.BUT only you can know how much you value the additional freedom car ownership gives you and how much you are prepared to pay for it.
Exactly!
webuyetc value it at £70, with an administration fee of £49.99 including VAT.
Wonder what the value will be in Sept with no road tax but 7 months MOT?
It cost me £700 in the past year for petrol, tax and insurance and servicing
I don't think I would spend that on taxis.

The car is worth nothing and everything.
Obviously we don't know your circumstances but I would only give up my car when either I couldn't afford it or I had no reason to own it.
PS. I see you've never thanked anyone:p.0 -
