Any free Registry Cleaners someone can recommend

I would normally do a google search but often the hits brought up by google turn out to be a spyware/virus.

Anybody here use one regularly? I have cleaned out a bunch of programs from the pc and want to clean the registry too.

run the cleaner bit first , then there is a registry icon on the left side , do a scan and fix the items it finds...

Eeek! Too late - downloaded, installed and ran ccleaner and cleaned what it found!

The Cleaner utility is fine, but there is also a Registry Cleaner function under 'Registry'.
You can make a back of the changes, so no need for panic when using it. But make sure you choose the option of making the backup.

Just out of interest. In one of my computer books it is suggested that a registry clean is not really required.

Pobby, I load and remove lots of bits and bobs, but they always leave bits in the registry. Every so often, I back-up all my documents, pics, films, etc and wipe the system. When I do, even though I re-install all my usual progs, the boot up sequence is MUCH quicker.

There's no saving on the HDD (or very little), but I do notice the difference on startup. The only thing I can think of is that it must be a big pile of pap in the registry that causes the delays.

I too would be very wary of 'registry cleaners'. They can do no end of damage.

When programs are uninstalled they often leave traces of themselves in the registry and as time goes on your computer gets clogged up with all these left overs. Trying to get rid of them while not knowing which ones affect others and which are interlinked and which affect existing used programs.....and you can see where the problems can arise.

A highly recommended program is Revo uninstaller. This (provided you switch the Revo installer monitor on when you install a new program!) actually monitors the installation process such that it knows and records exactly what changes and additions the new program's installation made to the registry....and when you uninstall said program Revo then cleans up the bits that the uninstaller didn't remove.

It's only the pap that loads stuff that slows a pc down, and registry cleaners don't touch that, they are a complete waste of time.

Comodo System Cleaner

Both back up the deletions just in case.
