PGCE loan for over 25 year old.

A friends son has just begun to complete the application for the PGCE loan. He is 25 but still iving at home.

As I understand it he is now classed a self supporting wherever he lives, but when he comes to the portion of the form asking for income it only has the options for household income, not personal income.

How does he proceed? Any help would be great as I am stumped too.

  • do you mean the3 online form or the paper version?

the online version should only ask for his unearned taxable income

the paper form covers all possibilities, so some bits need ignoring, if he is 25, he will not need to put parental income in anywhere (he would however, need to include income from a partner if he lives with one)

it is worth noting that if he lives with his parents, he will receive a lower loan even though he's over 25

Thanks, I think he tried the online version and then because it didnt seem to apply he started the papaer version (downloaded)

He has said it has two versions the one for assessed and unassessed income but both have the reference "household" income. So I am not sure.

Do you know which section asks for personal income?

He has worked for 2 years and is rteturning to study full time, so will only have the loans, manintenance grant and bursary as income.

He has been working in a school so to continue that is not an option as the hours will be when he is studying. He will look for part time work but as it stands will have no income at the point he starts the course. Is that what he should put?

How much lower a loan will he get for living at home?

Thanks for yor help with this.

Even if he's assessed as an independent student?
  • surprising, disappointing, but yes, this is within the regulations

So, to be clear, he will receive a lower loan, but he will be assessed for the maintenance grant element on his own income, not that of his parents?
  • He'll receive the "living with parents" rate of maintenance loan and, yes, his entitlement will be assessed on his own income, not his parents'.

There is only one form for new students, the PN1 form. Might be worth checking he has the right one.

On the form for new students, it is Section 8 where students declare their unearned, taxable income (estimate for 2010/11 academic year, only including interest off savings etc). He will not need to provide any details from any part-time work.

Having studied a full-time PGCE course myself, he will need to be realistic about his capacity for any additional paid work.

Thanks, so does he apply for the assessed or non assessed support?
  • if he applies online, he'll need to apply for assessed, if he applies with the paper form, he will automatically be assessed for full support

Thanks for that, I will phone him now and give him the details. I must say that it is not clear where over 25's fall in the scope of the form, and we have filled in forms regularly with our kids and this stumped me.

There is a bit in the guidance stating that an independent student living with parents can still claim the elsewhere rate. It's neatly hidden away though.
