That way you KNOW which one the washing machine has stolen
Me 3, @brie and @wondercollie. I pair them up before they go in the washing machine, so that I know if a sock is missing.

I have a laundry 'octopus' from Ikea and love it, I hang all the socks up in pairs which makes it easier to peg out and then when they are dry they are easier to put away as they are already paired. Its one of my favourite things - yes I'm sad!6

When we take our socks off we roll them together before throwing them in the washing basket. That way they are always grabbed in the same wash load. Just pull them apart as you put them in the machine. Saves time at the other end for pairing them back up, as each sock's partner will never be far away, and you never end up with stray singles!6

DD's nursery/ teaching assistant always wears odd socks. It gets the quietest child talking, and laughing, especially when they're newbies.
I do a quick count when I'm sorting lights and darks for washing then I hang them out in pairs. I fold them together to put in the drawer.2025 Fashion on the ration

A xmas one, sorry it's early! Chop the fronts off xmas cards and send them next year as postcards instead. Works especially well for the class cards children bring home.
