If you have a smoothie maker or blender, you can make your own oat milk for pennies & it has a much better consistency than the shop-bought stuff!
Just rinse a cup of oats, put in a blender with 500mls of water, blend for a minute & sieve a few times to remove all the bits.
This is something that I keep meaning to try and do.2025 Fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons

I use a slightly heaped teaspoon...:)
Suppose the amount depends on how bad the limescale is. I've just always flung a tablespoon into the kettle filled it up, boiled it, and that's done the trick.
As I mentioned earlier, I use spirits of salts for the loos, as it's much stronger than citric acid, and does a really good job, but you have to treat it with respect. I've tried citric acid, but it involved a lot more elbow grease and took longer. You can't use it anywhere with metal as it's corrosive.4 -

Thank you, going to give that a try.5 -
Will be going away on a beach holiday soon. Have borrowed two sun dresses to wear down to the beach from my mother. Usually do touring holidays so couldn't see the point of buying some extrA beachwear when my mother has drawers full of the stuff.

I'm still trying to get through all the posts so this may have come up before.
I keep a large jug in the bathroom by the shower. At this time of year when it gets really cold I do use a hot water bottle (even with socks and all I still feel the cold at times). When I go to empty it I empty it into the jug and when it is full I will use it to flush the toilet the next time it needs it. I also put the water that is left in my drinking bottle and sometimes water used for cleaning veg in it. Its a small thing but I'm sure it will save some pennies in the long run.Lisa x

I hear you. We've got one of those water filter jugs where the filter box says something like, lasts a month. Either we drink way more few than the average or they are basing on a very unthirsty family because ours starts going after a couple of weeks and you start seeing the limescale in the kettle again.
Where do you get spirit of salts from? This may be a new go to for me.....Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi4 -

Oh completely with you there, I always use filter water jug for any water to be used for cooking and in all electrical items such as kettle, coffee machine, iron and steam cleaner. I don't think the water filters actually remove limescale, but maybe reduce it a bit.
I'm not sure where you would buy spirits of salt (hydrochloric acid is another name for it) in UK. Perhaps in diy places, Amazon sell it for sure, as I've checked. They sell it in the supermarkets here, beside all the toilet stuff, presumably because the water is so hard on the island. If you do get it, wear rubber/latex gloves to open and close the bottle, and don't let it near any metal, as on your taps, in bathroom basin etc. Just down the loo, although I believe it is good for a patio cleaner. I just pour a small amount into the loo, leave for about half an hour, and quick zip around with loo brush, flush and job done.4 -

We used to use filter water jugs but we've stopped and I can't say I notice any difference in terms of taste. I have a hot water boiler that just boils one cup (Breville?) and I do wonder about whether the inside needs cleaning? There's no obvious way to do it - a brush through the lid would be very tricky and may catch on something important. Does anyone think it's a problem? Obvs the water gets (nearly) boiled before it's drunk. (not quite 100 degrees but quite close I think)4

If you have soft water, it won't be a problem. It's only hard water which causes limescale, and you'll know if you have this problem with limescale around taps etc. You'll also see signs of white in the water tank of your water heater.
If you do have limescale problem, first of all consult your manual and see what advice it has for limescale, and follow the instructions. Most manufacturers will tell you to buy their very expensive de-scaler, when citric acid will do the job just as well and for pennies.
I have a 1.2L tank in my coffee machine and use 3tsp citric acid to descale that, and give it 2 rinses through the machine afterwards just to make sure that there is no aftertaste.5
