I also use Stardrops to clean my carpet instead of buying special cleaner.
    Cleans ceramic hobs too.

Have been looking at carpet sweepers following Mummyfrugal's post - are they better at picking up cat hairs than hoovers? I have a British Shorthair which has an astonishingly thick coat and she is shedding her winter coat at the moment - my carpets are felted!!!

    Hi

You could try using a rubber broom (long-handled) for the hairs. It won't pick up bits tho'. Dampen the bristles if necessary.

I have two cats - both moulting - hard floors which seem to be constantly covered in hairs. I use the broom on the floors and the brush on the stairs and dampened on the furniture (sometimes - I'm not the world's best housekeeper)

I have a long handled rubber broom as our black lab moults constantly and we have cream carpets, this gets all the hair, which we then add to the compost :0)

I think the next clever trick for all of us on here is going to be to anticipate the inevitable VAT increase which will occur as a result of the new government's Austerity Budget to be announced within the next 50 days, although it may possibly not come into effect until April 2011. . With VAT almost certain to rise to 20%, it will be sensible to buy any large domestic items or to get maintenance/home improvements completed before it comes into effect. But there are speculations in the press now that VAT could be added to foodstuffs as well. Most basic foodstuffs such as meat, vegetables, bread and canned goods are currently exempt but chocolate, snacks, crisps and other items are not. So anybody who has a good amount of storage space to spare, as well as a little spare cash, could save money longterm by building up a good stock of non Use By goods now. The money you could potentially save in VAT costs will probably be more than the meagre interest you could earn on the same amount in a savings account.

Not so much money saving as time saving - if you're baking or doing any dirty job, keep a couple of smallish plastic bags open on the worktop to slip your hands into if it becomes necessary to answer the phone or the door, much quicker than washing and drying your hands and less risk of missing the call.

Put a good handful of salt or a cup of white vinegar in with the washing if you're not sure of the colour-fastness in a mixed wash....much cheaper and just as effective as those colour catcher sheets.
