I just went onto https://www.moneysupermarket.com to compare energy rates.
According to their site & a few other I tried my annual bill at the moment should be in the region of £800 for electric & £680 for gas.
This is no where near what I have been getting charged (pay quarterly), electric is about right but the gas???? My last gas bill was £300 & the bills before that weren't much cheaper, I pay roughly £1000 per year gas.
I am with british gas at the moment & on standard tariff.
According to the energy comparison I would save £400 per year with eon, fixonline v8.
I am not to sure about changing supplier though, as I have read alot of threads on here where they have signed up for say a £100 monthly direct debit & then at the end of the year being sent a letter saying you owe us £xxx amount.

Firstly what you did pay BG for gas on their standard tariff is not relevant as they have reduced their gas prices.

Also their discount for dual fuel is applied to the electricity account and you also get a further discount for paying by Direct Debit instead of quarterly.

Websaver 7 on BG is much cheaper than their Standard tariff, but depending on your consumption is probably not the cheapest tariff.

If you enter accurate information on all the comparison websites, you will get correct results.

Hi kevandkeira - Entering your annual cost for utilities does not give the most accurate comparisions from the Switch sites
Do a little home work on bills for the past year, and enter your annual consumption figures for Gas & Eletric
    All the best
  • As dogshome says, enter consumption rather than cost - your bill will tell you how many kWh you've used - just add up a year's-worth from bills. When I did this the comparison site came within £5 of my actual bills, so they can be very accurate. :)

    Hi,
sorry should have been a bit clearer yesterday, I did the comparison in kwh (annual).
So when it showed me what I am apparently getting charged at the moment, I just didn't understand how the gas was coming out much lower then I actually paid.
Does anyone have any experience of eon?? as they came out cheapest for me.

Hi, what size house are you living in, these gas and electricity costs are about twice the size of the average customer who uses 20500 kwh of gas and 3600 kwh of electricity. It is not always the cheapest option to go with the same company for both. I have found Scottish Power the cheapest for high electricity useage and EDF for high gas useage. If you enter the actual useage in kwh and select the correct tarrifs you are on, then the comparison sites should be reasonably accurate, the only variations are usually where they have not updated their site with the latest tarrif changes.

Hi kevandkeira - Great that you have used Kw and not cash for your Switch research
"Which" consumer magazine offer a switch service, which when you follow the Icons on the prices window, lists the itemised costs of your present supplier against a new one, side by side

Hi, its a 3 bed house. Our electric use is really high 6800kwh , our gas is 18000kwh.

I'll try comparing separatly rather than duel fuel & see what that comes back with.

Thanks, this comparison site is so much better.
If I stay with duel fuel then eon is coming out cheapest for me.
If I go with different providers then its ovo for gas & npower for electric, only a saving of £3.00 against duel fuel.
Does my old supplier have to be paid up to date before I switch?? My next quarterly bill is due in June, so do I switch then or anytime.
Edit: just realised I can get clubcard points for eon too, bonus.

Hi, on energyhelpline and uswitch, when you enter your combined details it gives you he best 'dual fuel' tarrifs, if you look at the tabs on the top of the list you can just click gas or electric and it will give you them individually. Also take into account that if you go through Quidco or Topcashback, at the moment, you can get £130 cashback for dual switch or £65 cashback for individual switch with Scottishpower and most other suppliers give some sort of cashback through these sites. When you apply to switch the new company contacts the old one, you don't do anything. It takes about 4-6 weeks for the switch to go through and you will then receive a final bill from your old supplier which would probably have to be paid within 28 days. The only reason they might block a switch is if you were heavily in debt with them. You can switch at any time as long as you have not recently entered a contract with exit fees, otherwise these will come into play.

Didn't even think off cash back, topcashback will give £70 for switching to eon. :j
