I wanted to have the reduced line rental to £8.54 per month which was available. It was withdrawn when I did not want to change over my phone calls to BT.

Has anyone managed to change the line rental to £8.54 with BT and retain the calls with Primus for example?

You cant get the line rental discount unless you have your calls with BT.

And of course the other difference is that earlier I was not tied to BT, now I am on a contract for 12 months. That is what they get out of giving the discount, I think.

Got my renewal letter from BT and called them on 0800 3457309 to explain I was thinking of moving to Primus - they asked for my account number and then immediately offered me a £36 credit if I renewed. On top of the paperless billing and DD discounts this makes them price competitive. I'm still not happy with the change in evening call definition from 6pm to 7pm but decided to stay with BT and avoid the hassle of a move (and possibility of a hefty re-connection fee if I ever want to return to BT!?)

Thanks again to MSE for another money saving tip!!

I hate to 'nit pick' but should this not be headlined as a 'Retention Only' deal? This price is not available to new customers (or am I wrong?)
I'm with TT and I called BT and asked about moving and was quoted £12.49 PM.

    Very True.

The Primus offer is available to people needing a non-cable landline.
Also is an actual monthly price rather than a one-off credit, hoping that you'll forget down the line.

    Maybe I'm just cynical...

  • Hi everyone,

I have my TV, Broadband and phone package with Sky. I pay my line rental of 11 pound something to BT. Can I change the line rental to Primus for £8.99, but still keep my Sky package? I'm very confused! A man I spoke to at U Switch said I couldn't :(

No, you have to have a BT landline or a Sky landline to have Sky broadband and/or Sky Talk.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If the Primus line was installed by Openreach then why won't Sky touch it - isn't the maintenance still as a BT line?

Thought I'd chip my tuppence in, as I've just had a very pleasant experience dealing with BT whilst renewing my 12 month contract:

Phone = £8.49 per month (line rental)
Evening & Weekend calls = Free (only pay for occasional daytime calls)
    Broadband Option 1 = £7.49 per month

There may be better deals out there, but I'm more than happy with that, as I've been with BT for over 10 years now, and in all that time my internet connection has only failed 2 or 3 times max! Decent customer service support too. Last time I upgraded they sent me the latest hub free of charge, but it sadly didn't work. I was expecting a struggle to get another out of them, but they just agreed to send me a replacement straight away, no hassle! I put a complaint in regarding incorrect billing a few years back, and it was dealt with in a very satisfactory manner, etc, etc... and no, I don't work for BT! (or know anyone who does) ;)

The difference in service between BT and someone like British Gas (whom I will never deal with again, even if they offered me free gas & electric for life!) is simply staggering, but that's only my personal experience of course. Your smileage may vary...
