I wish I could have done that when I posted this thread.

It's not a new thing, been around for quite a while.
If you do it, even before the person has read it, when it's removed it says "This message has been removed." You'd be better editing it to say hello or summit, rather than the original one (if needed obviously)

You don't seem to be able to do it with older messages, so I'd hazard a guess it's only unread ones.
