What can I do to cheer myself up?
Trying to save for our own house but weve only saved £500 so far. Our rent is 875pcm(Yes I know its pricey, but hey this is Berkshire, the place for some reason is expensive even though its a dump GRR:rotfl:)
Someone please lightne up my day and tell me how much renting depresses their lives too????????????????Savings for deposit for our first mortgage = £2200/10000:jI take it that £1700 has gone on this stuff. Look at it this way. If it takes you 6 months to save up £1700, that is 6 more months you have to remain in that place.
You have done well becoming debt free, but your struggle has to go on to accumulate savings so you can do the things you want to do. Are your leather sofas going to fit into your home when you buy it? What will you do if they don't? Or are you going to buy a house which suits the leather sofas? Yes, it is well done for buying them without credit, but actually if you didn't buy them now, you should not be expecting you could have bought them when you got your own house. It might be one of those things that just has to wait.
Please have a think about this. When you do get your first house, you may have to make compromises. Well, you need to get used to it. All you have done in buying your leather sofas is exhibited the behaviour of an indebted person, but done it with savings instead of credit.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I too can easily relate to this, I've been thinking about it for a couple of days.
We moved last year to here, we're in a 3-bed semi detached which hasn't been decorated since the late 1980s. The decor is decent quality, however things like where the wallpaper meets the skirting board have aged as they haven't been finished properly and are ragged and grubby. The LL also had a thing about green as all the downstairs carpets are a dark 'marl' green (as well as the stripes on the wallpaper) and wooden cladding everywhere and the whole effect makes the room rather dark.
Annoyingly (but understandably) the LL had a previous bad experience with old tenants who stripped the wallpaper bare throughout then moved out so is very reticent to let us decorate downstairs. He has agreed recently to let us decorate the two smaller bedrooms - I suspect this may be some sort of a trial run - I can only hope:D
I don't want to move as DD1 is at her 3rd primary already and she's only 6, it wouldn't be fair to do that to her again, plus DD2 is starting there in September, and I know from regular checks that there are very few if any 3-bed or bigger houses within catchment for the same sort of rent we pay now.
That's my motivation really - for the space we have, any other LL would be charging at least £50 more a month, could easily get more than that, as the house is very spacious and has a good size decent garden which is a godsend with the kids.
I've gone the route recently of trying to spruce up things to make it more liveable, but on a very MSE budget, it helps us feel better about the space we have and what we can and can't do, but we're slowly but surely starting to save a little. My aim is to be in a position to buy at the very latest in 8 years, yes may seem a long time but takes into account me being able to return to study then eventually work (am a stay at home mum at the mo), have some working time to be able to save, to be able to get the kids into the decent secondary school for which we'd have to move just down the road for, where the houses would be affordable for what our wages would be.
Of course that's all based on what I know now but it helps keep me sane as we really want to buy our own place eventually, and we can tweak and adjust the plan as we go.Dealing with my debts!Currently overpaying Virgin cc -balance Jan 2010 @ 1985.65Now @ 703.63

Why not ask your LL if you can redecorate? He may even pay for the paint if you ask nicely!
We had a house where the tenants had messed up the paintwork. The new tenant insisted on redecorating herself so we paid for the paint and brushes. I have no problem with my tenants decorating, providing its all returned to neutral shades if they leave.
Perhaps if you can brighten up the place with a fresh lick of paint you'll be happier there?:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -

It could be worse, you could live in my house ~ housing association 3-bed semi with chav neighbours who ride their bikes and roller skates over the front garden and throw food, crap and anything they like in the back garden, shouting and swearing and having no awareness of road safety.
I do know what you mean about it not being your house, and not wanting to spend your money on someone elses property. I haven't decorated my home and we moved in 6 years ago, saving hard for a deposit to move.
The only plus point is that our rent is cheap £470 pm, which enables us to save up. If we private rented we're looking at around £1,200 pm  ~ BIG difference.
If you're really determined to save and move then set yourself some mini goals to work towards.
