Sky freezing/Problems

I have had my sky+ box for over a year now.
It was fine at first but it has been a few months since quite a lot of the channels have freezing sound and sometimes the SKY has a spaz attack, and it dies (switches off and won't turn back on like its in a strop) and I have to unplug it and un-unplug it (apologies, lol), and it works fine, well it switches on but the sound stays the same. I have tried a software update as well - no difference.
What can I do?
Also, see with Sky+ HD, do you NEED to pay an extra £10 even if you don't take the HD channels. i don't even have a HD tv.
What can I do because its really annoying - no enjoyment, and I don't want to pay £65 or whatever it is for an engineer to come round.
I pay £18 a month, no premium channels.

If it's a Thompson Sky+ box, then it's likely your PSU is failing, you can get it repaired (see the list at the top of the forum) as Thompsons.Amstrad & Grundigs are notorious for this.
As for HD without the HD,no you dont need to pay for HD if you dont want it,you'll just have to pay a one off £49 (ish) for the box without the HD subscription, although the are constantly offers on for this as well.0 -

I saw that and was thinking of the self set-up which is free, but you have to pay £10 per month, and there's no point in me paying that seeing as I don't even have a HD tv. I doubt I could get it for free without having to pay for the HD subscription, although I would still carry on with my standard £18 a month variety pack.0 -

What you could do is try & sign up online using your partners details & if that goes thru, then cancell your current Sky account.
When the installer cones out to fit it,get him to check the dish & cabling.
Or phone up & threaten to cancel.0 -
Freezing is an in-built feature of all Sky boxes, specified to manufacturers under the terms of their contract, to ensure that Sky subscribers are given regular reminders of what life would be like without Sky and why it's therefore important to keep paying Sky money every month.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

It is just the sound that freezes0 -
On the Sky plus boxes, everything is recorded thru the hard disc drive first, that allows you to rewind what you are watching.
Yes, I have understood for a while now that while watching, the video is recorded simultaneously up to the set amount of time which is adjustable in the settings menu, and it is this which allows you to rewind, pause and forward.
I just want to clarify:the picture is fine, it is just the sound that freezes on certain channels and it is actually extremely irritating.
What do you think they will offer me if I threaten to cancel?0 -

Not sure,a service call is £69 so you could argue that you were thinking of getting the HD in as you are getting a new telly in the next few month, how much would they give you off the cost of a Sky HD without the HD just yet, failing that you'll go & get Virgin in.
You'll need to be put thru to retentions so make sure you ask the muppett on the phone.0
