I'd like to see your response if you were made to pay the full price of your education. Or if there were no loans.0 -

I am not a student so it doesn't actually effect me either way! I just think it is unfair that our society will pay for someone who decides they cannot be bothered improving themself or getting a job but penalise students with masses of debt. (BTW I am not talking about everyone on benefit just those who are deliberately sponging). I would rather see tax money spent on investing in education for our country's future than paying for the fags and cider of some layabout.0 -

It would depend on the degree, but if you look at whatever international students are paying it would be the same as that. Can range from about £10,000/year to £25,000/year. That's just tuition fees, but of course there would be living costs as well.0 -

How do they do it in USA? A lot of parents set up uni funds. Why can parents not do this here?
They take out loans too, at slightly lower than commercial rates (currently 6.8% for their version of our non-income assessed loan available to all). There's also a type of loan parents can take out to fund their child.0 -
I have an international friend at uni who pays £18k a year for fees plus accommodation and living costs on top of that.0

Now people are aware of student loans but when they were introduced for maintenance and then extended for tuition, parents and students didn't have enough advance warning for the government to save up for all costs.
Plus while it's feasible for some students to live at home and study it is not for every student due to the course they want to do only being available in a different location, not having a local university or having parents who don't want them to live at home.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
