Please help!

Ive been sacked and dont know what to do. I have never been unemployed so dont even know what I have to do to sign on or what I may be entitled to (or not). I am in my early 40's and single but have no savings. I think I will also find it hard to find a job and am really worried. Please help me.

You need to claim job seeker's allowance if you're able to work. (are you?)

You can also do it over the phone - you then have to go in and have an interview.

  • Thanks both. Im trying not to panic but its not easy! I cant think straight and cant believe they sacked me.Yes I can work, and want to but think I might find it hard to get work having been sacked? Ive never been sacked so dont know HOW hard it will be. How do I find out how much I can get in benefits.

For what reason were you sacked? Your claim may be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks. If this is the case you may be able to apply for a reduced rate of JSA.
    Gone ... or have I?

I dont want to say why I was sacked because I dont know who is reading :) Hope you understand!
I have been looking at the direct gov site and will try and see citizens advice next week. I had a few drinks last night so didnt get as much done as I would have liked but will do more today.
sh1305 I will make an appointment. I thought you just went in!!!!
I have told a few people now and feel better about that. One is going to cook me a meal later and I have quite a bit of food in.

dmg is right, it depends on the reson for your sacking if you will get your JSA sanctioned or not, for example misconduct/gross misconduct would be reason enough from what I remember.
Regardless of that get a claim in anyway as the sanction starts from when you claim not from your last day of work.
  • ok thanks! Is there anywhere that gives reasons for delayed claim or is it on a case by case basis? Seems unfair though that money delayed when youve paid tax and ni for over 20 years...just dont know how I will manage on benefits while I get another job, let alone no benefits!

Section 34060 is a good starting point.

If you have no other income you can apply for a lower hardship payment.
