You have it SO much better than previous generations...

From the ONS......

Housing, water and fuel now represent 21% of domestic household expenditure compared with 15% in 1970.

So yes it's more, but not a lot more.

But.......

Food and drink now represent just 9% of domestic household expenditure compared with 21% in 1970.

Clothing and footwear now represent just 5% of domestic household expenditure compared with 10% in 1970.

Alcoholic drinks and tobacco now represent just 3% of domestic household expenditure compared with 8% in 1970.

This would be great, but unfortunately we spend 83.6% of our net income on our interest only mortgage. It's a nice place though, and we hope to buy the other 50% of the property from Galliard Homes when I get a payrise next year.

    Good stuff.

What did debt repayments take as a total household expenditure in 1970 compared to today? :)

    .

Is it just coincidence that the goods in bold above are all now grown/picked/produced/packaged by slave labour.

What about the cost of luxuries now compared to 1970?

Back in 't day a decent tv would be several months wage, but now you can grab one off ebay for less than a days pay.

    I disagree totally.

You just have to get by with what you have in each generation.

Really don't see how these percentages actually say whether we are better or worse off, to be honest. Surely what matters is how much pie we have, not how its split up?

Yes but households now are generally 2 incomes rather than the 1 you could get by on in 1970.
