It will also automatically update its internal software if you always leave it in standby mode overnight.
That follows, without saying, from my original statement.
The point of me saying "occasionally" was that many people in these days of energy conservation choose not to leave their electrical equipmemt in stand-by mode at night. If that is the case with the OP, his software will not update, as the updates are downloaded overnight, as I understand.
Thus, he can still download updates and remain satisfied with his energy consumption provided he occasionally leaves the set on stand-by.0 -
Fiver and Five USA are not on Freesat, only on Freeview. The channel selection on these broadcast systems is similar but not exactly the same.
The television will auto-tune in all available Freesat channels when it's first switched on and will also automatically add new ones and delete old ones when the line-up changes - unless you have altered this in "Set Up" from the factory settings. This updating takes place transparently, so you are not aware of it until the new channel appears in the listing.
Similarly, it will tell you when a new Freeview channel becomes available and will ask you if you want to auto-tune it immediately or later. It deletes old channels automatically - again, subject to you not altering the factory settings.
The set will automatically update its internal software via the Freesat signal if you occasionally leave it in standby mode overnight.
Many Thanks for helping me out with the advice. Seems like a good telly. If i get a recorder whats best freesat or freeview as this tv has both? and if i get freesat recorder how many lnbs are required to use it? previously had sky+ with 2 lnbs but just using one for new freesat hd telly now?0 -
Not sure which model you have, mine is nearly 18 months old now, but they are good - did a lot of research before choosing, although final choice came down to the fact that, at the time, it was the only range that did Freesat built in.
Regarding Freesat vs Freeview - use both. We usually use Freesat by default because it has most of the channels we use and, if you keep swapping from one to the other, it gets confusing with channel numbers as these are different on both systems. I don't think there is any difference in reception quality unless you are in a poor signal-strength area for Freeview.
Sorry - can't help with the recording side as I use my computer with a TV card for that.0 -

Ignore post number 7 - it refers to freesatfromsky, not Freesat. We're talking about freesat here.0

I believe that the Freeview signal gets boosted in areas as they change over to digital-only, so if your area is due for the switch shortly, it might be worth waiting to see how good it is then.
I'm sure that I've read in other threads on this forum that you can retain the recording features of a Sky box, without the channel-subscription charges, by paying a monthly fee of £10, if that is of any interest.0 -

I only posted that post because of post 7. I think Sky news is available on Freeviev and freesatfromsky but not freesat. If you can get freeview I would have thought it was a better option than freesat as you get fiver and fiveusa. I can't get Freeview so i just took the card out of my skybox as the only advantage Freesat would give me is local ITV and Five on program guide.0 -
The annoying problem is that the channel mix between FreeSat and FreeView is slightly different. None of the Freeview Sky channels are on Freesat because Sky are not partners in it, as they are with Freeview. Also, the channel numbers are different, so if you punch in 1 to get BBC1 on FreeSat it will tell you it's invalid (it should be 101) and vice versa.
Freesat have some channels that are not on Freeview - mainly poor quality movie channels but if you are interested in international news then the news channels that are dropped by Freeview in the evening are 24 hours on Freesat.
If you can't get Freeview, then Freesat is an excellent alternative unless you must have the Dave channels or the Fiver / Five US ones.0
