Keep at it for the charges, they hope you will back down so they won't have to pay it back - I'm really lucky that over the past few years I have had very few charges (on a couple of cc's I had late payment charges, but always ring and have had them cancelled straight away!!)
Just before xmas I got charged £58 by Natwest for bouncing a d/d because I had checked online when it had gone out the previous month, checked my balance online in the morning a couple of days before I thought it was due, and it had already tried to go, (the previous month had been taken later than usual, and I didn't realise, if I had checked it for a few previous months I might have realised in time) I rushed to the bank to put the cash in, and told them to take it again, they said it was too late, it had been refused and I would get charged..........I was very nearly suicidal (and I'm not exaggerating) I ended up with choking sobs on the phone to the lending centre at Natwest, and had to end the phone call because they refused to back down, I had to go for a long walk because I couldn't breathe, and having suffered depression and panic attacks in the past I thought that night was my nervous breakdown moment!!
The point I am trying to make is people like me who back down over £58 are a god send to Natwest, theres probably hundreds of people all over the Uk right now looking at their online balances and thinking "Oh S%$^, I forgot that payment was due" and Natwest are rubbing their grubby hands with glee, so with a massive amount like you are claiming it is definately NOT the time to back down, I would go in all guns blazing!!!!
I hope you win!!
(sorry you'll quickly learn my posts are long and waffley, I have trouble condensing what I want to say!!!!)
