Defrauded by Santander - again.

Hi,
I banked with Barclays both personally and business for over 12 years...
I fell out of love with them and moved to Santander...2 years ago.
Last year someone used my details and purchased £1500 worth of climbing gear, and the Abbey/Santander let them - took me a few weeks to get it back.
I checked my statement last night and realised that £600 had been transferred out of my account...
It actually Said Transfer to Mr "PeterC2609" Ref: Mr "PeterC2609"
Now I know I hadn't done any transactions between my accounts so called the bank (In India)
They gave me the account number it was transferred into, which wasn't one of mine, but couldn't help me any more, apart from telling me it was done over the phone - I dont use telephone banking.
I went into my branch this morning, and again was put on a phoneline to someone, who gave me a name which sounded African, which was the name on the account the money was transferred into, and all they could tell me was that this person was a student and they would investigate and would take 10 days, during which time my account was on hold.
So... I'm asking how they would have done this transfer, what details would they have needed, and how the hell santander would have allowed it to go through!?!

The most likely scenario is that you've allowed your security infomation to be compromised. If that turns out to be the case, I hope retract your accusation that Santander has defrauded you (which I don't think anyone reading this thread believes for a minute).0

Please explain how Santander have defrauded you when it is patently obvious that they haven't.
Somebody has obtained enough information about you to get past their security.So... I'm asking how they would have done this transfer, what details would they have needed, and how the hell santander would have allowed it to go through!?!
You need to look at how you protect the PC you use for banking.
You need to look at how you dispose of things at home (get a shredder).
You need to look at those who know you best and ask youself if they like buying climbing gear.
The source of the problem is not, for once, Santander. They are the big losers in this.0 -
no doubt all your banking details have been nicked from you because someone's got a trojan running on your computer.
here's a simple suggestion: buy a netbook and use it for all your banking, don't use it for anything else other than banking, do not install any apps on it, do not customise it, just use it for accessing your banks and only that since clearly you lack the technical competence to keep yourself from being attacked like this.0 -
No need to criticise, I'm a highly paid IT professional and my system is VERY secure.
The previous time I was 'had off' was by a criminal who retained my card details after purchasing something over the phone.
This time, they have actually called the call center and transferred money from my account. So yes I do blame the call center. I have all of my statements so nothing has been intercepted. I do not use telephone banking myself.
SO, someone with a nigerian accent has called up and pretended to be me and moved money from my account.
Main issue is.... a few months back I was buying travel tickets and my card was declined and my phone immediately rang - it was santander checking the transaction - great!
Next thing, I was buying currency - same thing!
Now my card gets used to buy thousands of pounds of outdoor gear, including 5 of the same coat - but no suspiscions were raised. Again this was done via mail order and I didnt find out till a few days later.
And then this recent problem - again, why wasn't this seen as suspiscious.
The original post was asking for information as to what details would needed to be provided in order to carry out a transaction like this over the phone...
By the way - it was ME who resolved the issue about the climbing gear by finding out who had bought it by speaking to the store managers involved. Santander didnt care, and I got the police involved and the issue resolved.0 -

I find it rather funny when people don't know how skilled you are in certain areas, but make themselves look good.
A bit like the traffic copper who stopped a speeding driver and said "who do you think you are? Jenson Button?" And it was in fact Jenson Button... he must have felt a fool!0 -

the majority of netbooks run Linux distros and of course have firewall capabilities built in, the odds of you getting a virus are slim to none.
if you choose a Windows device then apply common sense.0 -

How do you know this supposed person had a Nigerian accent? You obviously weren't skilled enough to keep your security details private. As a "highly paid IT professional", one would expect you to appreciate the situation for what it was and not go off making obtuse allegations against your bank and throwing your toys out of the pram as soon as anyone questions your culpability for the situation you've described.I find it rather funny when people don't know how skilled you are in certain areas, but make themselves look good.0 -

how did some "nigerian" get enough information on you to access your telephone banking if it wasn't via your computer?0 -
The lady in the Fraud Prevention Centre told me the guy was a Nigerian Student... I presume nigerian students have nigerian accents!?!
How did they get the info?? What info?? Thats what the whole thread is about...
What information would be required to perform a transfer over the phone... its in the first post!?0
