AF, do you have any people in your social circle you can ask? I used to put down someone I used to work with who was also a friend...

    hi krystal,

oh i could do that for sure.

If the job doesn't specify that it requires references in the application, don't put any. A CV doesn't need to have references on it. You can add a note along the lines of "excellent references available on request" or something if you feel it's appropriate.

If the application process requires references that's fine (but not on the CV), in which case if they require multiple work referees then yeah, identify two people in different parts of the same business (or different time-periods as you suggest). Otherwise one work ref and one personal can be pretty acceptable too. It'll be obvious from your CV that there's just the one company in your work history I suppose, so it shouldn't be too surprising to them if you can't produce multiple companies as references!

    hi bruno,

thanks for that. there will be more than one company in my history on my CV, but it will be the only UK one. i guess i could provide email address for the person i worked for back home.

Thank you very much. I always like an opportunity to go to boots :D not sure how MSE it is though!

AF - I would expect to see current employer and either an earlier employer or a character reference for the second. I don't see a problem with you putting an Aussie reference down. I have written references for ex-employees in Australia and New Zealand.

If someone were put down as a character reference only (no knowledge of your working history) then I would expect it to be noted as so to enable me to ask different questions when I request a reference (for example, I wouldn't ask a character reference about your punctuality or sickness record).

...acutally unsure if I am allowed to ask about sickness record any more - bl00dy political correctness

thanks MFD. the issue i guess with a reference for my current workplace is that they dont know i am thinking of going, which is what made me think of the practice manager we had.

can use someone in oz. shouldn't be a problem. i saw her when i went back home actually.

as for sickness, i dont think i've had one day off sick in the 6/7 years i've been there so i dont mind them asking :D

Bruno, thankyou :o (have PM'ed you too ;)).

AF, I would leave all mention of referees off your CV, personally

Did you see I added to my post above. Perfectly acceptable to say that you don't want your employer to be contacted until any company is on the verge of offering you the job (most would offer you 'subject to suitable references')

Part of the Furniture Photogenic Combo Breaker
Som, i cut the bottom off a carrier bag and put some glass pebbles, flour and rice in and rolled it into a ball, sellotaped together and wrapped in white tissue paper and cellophane :)

Also they are only cutting tax credits for people on incomes over £50k a year so not cutting it completly.

    Anyway, night all x

AF - Hugs I'm not happy at work either and I've been job hunting for a couple of months, but the wages in my area of work seem to have dropped :(

EA - your cake stand if fabulous, interesting use of tins of sausage and beans :)

Oops need to stop the spending habit this month, I accidently on purpose bought Katie the Wizard of Oz DVD and CD, it's what they're learning at dancing for their next show, she needs to learn the words to Over the Rainbow if possible.

Where have all the night-owls gone?

A little obscure but somebody might (worryingly) be on my wavelength LOL

Why is it so difficult to get to bed at a decent hour when hubby is away?

    Night all xx
