Do you have consent to lease from your lender? If not you should not be letting the flat, in which case your possessions can stay in situ.

I've just rented a garage to put my things in - it is costing me £25 a month in a nice area of Manchester. Much cheaper than the storage places even with insurance.

I own a garage which I'm just about to start renting out in the region of £40-50 pcm - in comparison to self-storage units on big complexes (with subsequent large overheads etc) - garages do tend to be a cheaper option - and some are hardly anything!

Like other people have said - it all depends on how much stuff you really want to keep...

There was a storage co on the tesco deals website.

    Found it http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/search.aspx?Ntt=storage&VSI=17&Ntk=primary&Nty=1&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchall&Nr=NOT%28P_Product_TypeID%3A5%29

Your home contents policy may well cover you for stuff in storage anyway, meaning you don't need to pay extra for insurance.
You'd think so wouldn't you? However, for non-commercial rentals Safestore insist on you using their insurance cover i.e. you cannot self-insure or use that of a 3rd party.

It's only a couple of pounds per week (for a few grands worth at least) but it's still a bit of a 'hidden extra' in my book.

Great value with the Tesco Deal though.
