Help needed with start-up

Have tried all the 'system restore' points available to me - but no joy.
Got hold of a Windows XP Pro CD and booted from that..
Ran through the 'windows Set-up' page
but then came up with a stop code..
STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
SystemRoot/System32/ntdll.dll
(did not get to the 'Windows XP Prof Set-up' page)
Is this an error on the CD rather than the computer itself?
If so, is there a way to 'fix' it or would I require a different CD to use?
Thank you0
