Help needed with start-up

Hi

Switched computer on this morning to get the following:

We apologise for the inconvenience
Windows not start successfully
a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

It then gives the following choices:

Safe mode
Safe mode with Networking
Safe mode with Command Prompt

Last known Good Configuration
Start Windows normally.

I have tried all the choices but it just loops round to this same screen.

(The only software I ran yesterday was the free super anti-spyware)

Any advice?

Cheers

Have you ran super antispyware before, or was that the first time?

Do you have the Windows disc, is it Windows XP?

    Hi

I'd run the spyware a couple of times before without problems.
Computer runs Windows XP - no disc though :(

You may need to take the computer to a local repair shop, unless you can get hold of a CD.

Basically what's happening is there is a fatal error occuring and Windows is set by default to automatically restart when that happens. What you can do is disable this automatic restart which will present you with the error message (aka blue screen), the blue screen will contain some important STOP codes which can be used to help diagnose the problem.

To disable automatic restart, turn the computer on then keep tapping F8 until you see a menu with an option that says something like 'Disable automatic restart on system failure', if you use select and press enter on that, the machine will reboot but this time will show the blue screen with the error message. Post the STOP codes here or Google them.

Easy to get hold of a disc, just need to know the correct version.

    STOP codes are as follows:

Do you have McAfee Security (Antivirus) by any chance, I noticed today that in there most recient update they messed something up that deleted a file needed by Windows XP. simply google McAfee Windows Xp and you will find all the info. If you do not have McAfee disregard this post. Best Of Luck.
  • Hi, I have exactly the same problem. Think I have the windows XP disc. If so can you tell me what to do with it ?

Apologies if this is a stupid question. I am not that hot on pc problems.

    Thanks, Blainey.

Received ERD Commader (Thanks Paul T) and also another reboot cd but although I can get the screen that lets me choose to boot from CD, the computer just carries on round in the original loop...
Is all hope lost if I don't have the XP pro discs?
Would a repair shop be able to load where I cannot?

Any replies would be appreciated as I'd prefer to know when to quit!

Many thanks for your time & thoughts!
