Err, I'm mighty confused here. Going off the last comment about a cup of coffee, that of course would go everywhere because it has a detachable lid with holes in.

But a bottle of screenwash is a sealed container and shouldn't leak unless handled rather carelessly. I would expect a sealed container to cope with a car journey. I'm wondering how the other posters in this thread transport things like milk and bottled drinks from the supermarket?

Funny you should mention milk, my auntie had that same problem, milk spilt all over the boot - and when she complained to Sainsburys she got the car valeted for free! I wouldn't have the cheek, personally - but she's an A1 complainer :D

To be fair to OP, what exactly are they meant to have done ?
Gaffer taped it to the roof of the car ? ?

Its not their fault that halfords have supplied him with a cheap nasty bottle that cant even survive 1 car journey home.

    • Wedge it with other items?
    • Lay it down on it's side so it doesn't have so far to fall?
    • Put it on a seat and strap it in?
    • Put it in the footwell?
    • Drive more carefully with the knowledge theres a big bottle of liquid stood upright in the boot?

Wedged it upright in the boot with other bags or whatever. It's not rocket science.

Same reason peanuts have to have labels saying may contain nuts.

The only reason they say "may contain nuts" is because they are processed in the same factory as nuts and it's quite likely that cross-contamination can occur.

Peanuts (despite their name) are not nuts, they are beans (legumes)...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I think you've all missed the point here, regardless of the fact the op shouldn't have placed it in the boot of the car.
The fact is the op complained and they requested the item, receipt and quote to repair the damage - isn't that an admission of liability in itself?
Why didn't Halfords just tell them their policy of advising customers to carefully store and carry all items once they have left the store, in the 1st place?
The other factor is did they tell the op? I've never seen a sign, been told, or anything printed on the receipt to suggest how I should transport my purchases.

Seems to me the OP has a good case to take this further, and should escalate the matter to the chief exec office @ halfords.
Even if they manage to provide evidence of advising customers how to transport their purchases, surely he was misguided in the 1st place in having to obtain quotes to repair the damage, and should duly be compensated for his time, travel, and effort to obtain these quotes.

OP - escalate it to the CEO on this email address david.wild@halfords.co.uk

Good Luck, and oh back seat footwell in future, with the front seat pushed right back to secure it.
  • Is it me or are a load of people in this world having their common sense removed. Yes, it should not have leaked, I am not going to argue with that but there is a chance that it could have. Therefore some care should have been taken when putting it in the car. It is not Halfords fault that an accident occured and how the hell is it bad customer service!!!
