its the old corgi scam all over again.
i never knew that writing out a certificate cost so much money.Get some gorm.0 -
"You are talking to me like I am a total muppet and clueless, You are also assuming worse case senario for everything. I have done my homework on this and are ensuring everything is in place ready for it to be fitted at the cheapest possible price. The notice plate is not worthless, it is there ready to be filled in by the proffessional who is coming into install the stove (when I can find one who does not try to rip me off). The register plate has been made by friendly engineering company and was free. The cowl is not cheap rubbish and costs nothing as it is already on the chimney. The chimney does not need to be swept as it has never been used for solid fuel. Fireplace hearth has been built to regs minimum 300 to front and 150 to sides. 500 to bottom of lintel (6" piped stove)." "Im not doing the job myself, I have bought all the bits and want a HETAS engineer to fit it."
Im lost here, I thought you were saying you could do the whole job yourself for less than £300 and comparing it with a registered liner and installer and basically saying all lining firms are con artistes. And now you say you are not actually paying out for some of the items necessary and that you arent actually fitting the lining nor are you fitting the stove and you are doing all the preparatory work yourself.. Then its a nonsense to compare the costings against a proper firm doing the whole job from beginning to end isnt it! Its a bit like saying, "the car salesman wanted £17k for my new VW Golf but Ive gone and bought the bits to build it for £4k, what a scam".
The Data plate that came with the liner is worthless without it being completed by a competent person. Im sure the bloke you finally get to install it - who is NACE/HETAS registered (as opposed to just approved) will explain that to you and issue you the Compliance Certificate.. Make sure you also get the warranty on the liner and stove.

Youre not getting the picture here.
I got a quote from a firm for £1400 to install the stove (which i have already, stove price not included) This quote included parts and labour and signing off installation.
My argument is, If i can get all the required bits for under £300 ( i know i got a few parts free) thats means it would cost me £1100 in labour and signoff.
If i can get the parts at this price (not trade) then the company is basically charging me £1100 for labour!
The notice plate isnt worthless cos it cost me a fiver
and yes i know it has to be filled in, like i said before im not a clueless muppet.
In a nutshell, I have all the parts required for the installation, i have done all the prep work. All the fitter has to do is stick a steel pipe up a brick pipe connect it to a stove and sign it off (yes I know its a little more involved than this). This should take no longer than a day. Is £1100 a justifiable rate to do this? In my opinion they were trying it on.0 -
Then cant be compared with the OPs query which was for a job top to bottom including an external stack and a granite hearth.
Good luck with finding someone.0 -
i had mine done last year..a hawk4 double double = about 1k ,liner = about £600
forget how much all the other bits n bobs were. i had scaffold erected (i paid for) & fitted the tophat myself..had it all suplied/installed by heatas enginere for £2.2 if thats any help..0 -
I've recently had a similar quote but doesn't include new hearth !:
take out existing fireback and plastering, pulling down 904 top grade liner with all relevant fittings, supply and fit ultimate flue outlet cowl
£2800 (incl vat)
supply Stockton 5 multifuel £750
all rubble left on site, no joiner work.
Pretty steep I thought, so looking for other quotes0 -
Can I have advice from the experts too?
the regs in Scotlad dont apply BTW, no HETAS.
My oh has a property maintentence business, covers many trades and he is an electrician firstly.
He has been asked to fit a Stovax, and is confident to do so, with advice from our local fireplace shop.. they say he will have no probs fitting it.
difference to the above posts; its a bungalow so no chimney probs as far as height goes.
i have my concerns about him fitting it, but need advice.0 -
OP, just noticed fires on line have a summer sale and you could purchase your Stockton 5 MF for a lot less from them about £635 inc vat I believe.
Yes cb, that does seem high. Cor, getting away with leaving rubble on site, it makes me wonder how people stay in work, but then we have been going 30 years and have seen literally dozens of liners start up and close down in that time.
Sindy, if you say England regs dont cover Scotland (no idea about that) then I should contact your local buildings control and ask just what paperwork will be required. (Re, "its only a bungalow, so no chimney probs" - one thing you do have aproblem with in bungs sometimes is a short stack which gives a very poor draw)0 -
Thanks for all the replys - blazes have said that 316 st/st is suitable and give 15 yrs guarantee on liner. I don't suppose I will be in this house for longer than 10 yes so is this grade sufficient?0

I to install flue liners and stoves and all i can say is that the guarantee on the liners is not worth jack if you burn the wrong thing they will annalise the inside of the liner to see what youve been burning if 5 years ago the timber wasnt seasoned properly VOID.
Saying all that we have been fitting for 18 years and not had to go back to one.
Now to let you all know an average price for supply and fit without stove or hearth is for a 2 storey house---8m liner--600mm stove pipe---pot hanging cowl--- vit connector and installation plate which we get free with every liner £700-- the hetas certificate costs us £3 each so all the training 2 days at approx 6 hours aday
which i could of sent my chickens on to pass cost me £300 and be aware if the fitter dont send in his paper work its not afficiually passed nothing. To register then costs you an extra £300.
When i went on my course there was me and one more that actually fitted fires out of 18 people incuding a postman a baker and gardener we all passed what a suprise
Any way i hope thats cleared up a few little arguments, so i will say my goodbyes tara cheers kev:beer:0
