Kitten to be spayed, what to expect

My kitten is to be spayed on Friday and I was looking for some advice.
My previous cat (male) was fine after he was neutered and the only adverse reaction he had was that he was sick 'coz I feed him too soon after the op.
My parents cat (female) was totally different - badly affected, completely stoned and would jump a mile at every noise/ movement.
Is this what I should expect for my girl and if so how do I keep her safe when she is coming round?
Also don't want her to be sick so what should I feed her? I made some chicken soup (recipe on Pet's Kitchen!) and she is completely underwhelmed :D

Dont worry ,cats handle it really well ,we had a male and female kitten done at the same time and there was no difference in recovery :)

Well it is long time since I had it done to my cat - I said good-bye to her Oct '08, and she was 20.5 then!
Yet, I remember feelings of quilt - what have I put you through - but that soon passed. She was a bit groggy for awhile - stayed asleep while I walked her home from the vet. Didn't take long though to get back to 'normal' - her only possible lasting side-effect was hating going in a pet carrier!!

20? that IS old for a cat. Sounds like you gave her a very nice life though :)

As for being spayed, cats may seem a bit jumpier and easier to scare for a little while, but overall they will be fine.

Yep, already have the guilt but she's a CPL cat and I also want her to have the option of being an out door cat.
Strangely enough I didn't have any guilt when my boy cat was done!
  • I am a "rescuer" and have had many cats spayed and neutered. In my experience, the females cope slightly better than the males, and usually the only give away is the shaven sides. The boys tend to sit down rather gingerly, typical males! I've never had one that's been sick afterwards. I tend to feed them with chicken the first night, then normally back on to their usual food.

Well done to you having her spayed - this is one of my favourite rants, people that allow their cats to have litter after litter, and usually sell the kittens "so that they go to a good home"........grrrrrrrr.

Let us know how she gets on.

    xx
Mad about cats - or maybe just mad! :rotfl:

Thanks - but then that's why I'm 'no1catman' - sorry couldn't resist that, I was called that after befriending a couple of wildcat kittens at the River Kwai Hotel in Thailand!

Yes, I still miss her - her Chronic Renal Failure got too bad, her blood analysis figures in Jan were three times 'bad' i.e. '10' was high she had '30'. But after awhile with patience & care she rallied, but six months later her legs got bad - couldn't jump, her gait was bad - comes a time when holding on is being selfish!

My girl was fine after being spayed. She just walked round looking a bit miserable as she had the white hood thing on. She wanted to jump on my lap but couldn't get comfy. She loves being the centre of attention at the best of times so think she enjoyed me feeling guilty!
  • Hi my checkers was done a fortnight ago and it went well - her belly was shaved but she was playing when she came home but apparently was really grumpy in the vets (she was called worse than evil - the cat before her was called evil and stupid!) she scratched 3 of the nurses and they had to wear gauntlet gloves to microchip her!! - I did say to the vet well what do you expect you starved her from 8pm the night before, you've shaved her belly, operated on her and then microchipped her all without getting any food!! She was fine when she came home but as the nurse gave me the coller she did say "good luck" (I hasten to say Checkers hasnt scratched me and is now outside with fur growing back as happy as can be!!! - so dont worry!!!)
2010 has got to be better than the last two years!! :rotfl:

Weight loss to date: 3 Stone & 5lbs!! Weight loss this week: 2 lbs !!:j

Never had any problem with our cats. Just don't let them outdoors for a few days as there's a chance they wont come back. My ex's dad made that mistake. But my dad let our tabbi out and she rushed off but returned a few hours later. so it can be hit and miss.
  • Slightly stoned cat for the evening.

They get the munchies - chicken is good for that.

Then not much to report, just making sure they don't worry at the stitches too much.
