  • I also agree that i am sure its nothing to do with your accent, it would just have been the assistant manager having a bad day and the extra stress of putting through the exchange etc. Not excusable but definitely not racist.

I am sure you will hear back from company soon.

Oh come on now , we all agree you were treated a bit rudely , we all agree you should write to complain and we all agree you should get a voucher or something BUT to now accuse someone of being racist or ignorant IS OTT

"People like to ignorantly assume" It is not ignorance , you do sound like some Americans and vice versa, i travel to America a lot, i speak English and many Americans ask me if i am from Australia, that is not ignorant?

And WHAT Stigma? Maybe the Canadians and the Americans feel there is a Stigma but dont IGNORANTLY assume that British feel there is a stigma attaced to Americans (and treat you as such) Blimey i do sound harsh but you do sound like you have a chip on your shoulder about something and everybody is horrible to you based on. mmmm. your own thoughts.

SO i am not being horrible to you, i just want you to take a look at what you have written, think about how what you have written may offend people and really put things in perspective, you were treated unfairly or rudely, complain, move on

I think that was an over-reaction to my post. I’ll explain what I mean.

I’ve lived here for 5 years now and a common topic of conversation when I first meet people is my accent. Most people assume I’m American (although I sometimes get people thinking I’m Irish too haha). When people find out that I’m Canadian they often tell me they’re glad I’m not an American. I’ve worked for years in the services industry so I meet many different people every day. So you can see why I think some people attach a stigma to Americans – I’ve been told so many times!

I certainly don’t assume that ALL people have a problem with accents. There’s no need for you to take offence at the fact that SOME people do though. I think if you had a foreign accent and lived in Britain you might be aware of it too.

I don’t know what you mean when you say that I “assume everyone is horrible to me based on my own thoughts”? I don’t assume anything like that at all. Most people are very nice to me! But after being told by some British people that they don’t like Americans, it does pop into my mind sometimes in cases like this manager, where someone seems to be rude for no real reason.

I mention it as a possibility, that’s all. Maybe this person was just rude and unhelpful, maybe there was something else to it. I don’t know. Surely there's no harm in considering different options?

I’m glad people are commenting on it and I’m happy that people seem to think my accent wasn’t the issue. But your rudeness was uncalled for. I’m not ignorant and I don’t have a chip on my shoulder, I find it odd that you could take this from one post on an internet forum. I was just venting a little, it does make me fed up that people can be negative towards others just based on how they talk! If you don’t agree with anything I said then that’s ok, but there’s no need to be rude about it.

Again, thanks for all the replies!

    Thanks, you're probably right!

I think from shopping there that the discounts are automatic on the til and they have stange ways of working out which discounts you get.

To be honest I think you got a good shop anyway cos the one round here wouldn't let you exchange the make up, and probably not the body butter either. I would put it down to a bad day and move on. In the grand scheme of things how much impact is it going to have on your life? Yes persue it if you really want a voucher but other than that stop stressing yourself out. After all you did get a £5 birthday gift in the first place - not many places do that!
    Bump due 22nd September
  • That sort of attitude from a staff member can really leave you feeling like rubbish and ruin your day. It's their job to be helpful and polite. I'm sure the owner of BodyShop would be horrified to know that one of their staff was giving the business a bad name. I hope your letter has the desired effect.
