harvey ~ FIREFOX is another browser you can use (personally i use firefox all the time)
If you really must use IE (if you can, its possible its knackered beyond repair) ~
Try running in SAFE MODE

If that works then an add on is causing the problem
If it fails then all I can suggest is attempt to install IE7 in its place:idea:0 -
To uninstall ie8 in Windows 7:
To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps: Close all programs.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
In the tasks pane, click Turn Windows features on or off.
In the list of windows features, clear the check box next to Internet Explorer 8.
You receive a warning message in a pop-up window. Click Yes.
In fact I've used FF, Chrome and IE8, but now prefer Opera.0 -
do you have access to another pc with internet access?
if so the easiest option would be to download the full installer of IE8
i would also download firefox or chrome at the same time and put all the installers on a memory stick then install from there on youre main PC0 -
