If you have equipment capable of receiving a tv signal as it's being broadcast, then you need a tv license. Lots of people think this means any pc, but if you haven't got a tv card insert thingy in your pc, then you're not watching it live.
I'm afraid that's another myth - it doesn't matter whether you have equipment capable of receiving a TV signal or not. You only need a licence if you are watching or recording TV as it's being broadcast.0 -
I recently got rid of my TV as I prefer to spend time reading or watching DVDs. I wrote to the licencing people and informed them that I would not be watching any live streamed TV on my computer. They sent a letter and a refund for the unexpired part of my licence.
I assume that they will check periodically that my situation hasn't changed. If I lied on the form and get caught it would form a legal basis for prosecution.
I don't know whether the detector equipment can pick up live TV on the internet - they can tell if your TV is on as opposed to watching a DVD on the set.
erm.... no they can't.0 -
I've always ignored them and never had a visit. In fact, it's probably about 3 years since they last bothered writing to me (although I have moved in the mean time). There are other people who say they have contacted them and still got letters /visits. It's up to you, but I find my recycling bin is (a) free and (b) costs me less time than picking up the phone.jonnyb1978 wrote: »If they ignore you they will only assume its on purpose and you have something to hide. The simple thing to do is read the letters and ring them. I bought a tele for a relative and the shop passed my details on and later revieved a letter about not having a license etc etc, ignored it and got another one.
I simply rang up and stated i do not have a tv, i bought a tv for a relative and thats that. Told them they are welcome to send a representative to check. He politely said no worries, updated his details and never heard from them since.:)0
